dresser Rita May Brown, 26,
played by Marcia Kash, joins Brit-
ain's Open University Program,
working at, her +regular job, study-
ing at home and attending tutorials
at night at Oxford.
Dr. Frank Bryant, the scotch sod-
den don, played by distinguished
Canadian actor, director, and writ-
er Sean Mulcahy, who also direc-
tors Educating Rita in the Play-
house production, tries earnestly to
have Rita select another tutor. He
tells her he doesn't like participat-
ing in the Open University "be-
cause I don't like the hours - it's
when the pubs arc all open".
Rita turns out to be a brilliant
student who brings an innate intelli-
gence and simple logic to her stud-
ies. More and more Professor Frank
encourages his protdge because of
her intuitive and avaricious lust for
learning. Each meeting between the
two results in a frank and often
laugh provoking dialogue. The
modern "Pygmalion" story was a
long-running West End play that
won the prestigious SWET Award
as the .Rest Comedy in 1980.
In 1983, J ilie Walters received
her stage role as Rita in her movie
debut, with Michael Caine as Pro-
fessor Frank. This won an Acade-
my Award nomination for play-
wright Willy Russell. •
Marcia Kash returns to Huron
Country Playhouse after a long ab-
sence. Audiences will remember
her many roles at the Playhouse, in-
cluding Libby in "I Ought to be in
Pictures", Kate in "Bedroom.
Farce", and Mrs. Markham in
"Move Over Mrs. Markham". Since
her last appearance at the Play-
house, her career has taken her to
such places as Broadway in "
Sherlock's Last Case"; Stratford
Festival as Lady Macbeth in "Mac-
beth"; Alberta Theatre Projects in
Calgary as Belinda in "Season's
Greetings" and Theatre Plus in To-
ronto as Rita in "Educating Rita".
Other accomplishments include a
recently completed series for Brit-
ish TV, moving back to Toronto af-
ter five years living in Edmonton,
and marrying Ron Ulrich, former
artistic director of Huron Country
Playhouse.
Sdan Mulcahy has performed in
most major (and minor) Canadian
theatres. He possesses a number of
awards including the Andrew Allan
Ward for "The Panther and the Jag-
uar", the A.C.T.R.A. Award for
"Philadelphia, Here I Come!" and
the Queen's Medal for "worthy and
devoted service to the arts". Film
credits include "Quiet Day in Bel-
fast(", "The Butler Duet" and
"Masks". He says he has stopped
counting his radio performances,
although he mentions his most re-
cent as Dr. John Watson in "The
Death of Sherlock Holmes" for the
CBC.
