Mission
Scotland '91
by Eugene Fox
SCOTLAND - I can see the real
possibility of Scotland becoming a
spiritual superpower for all Eu-
rope". So declared Billy Graham
repeatedly as he preached the 10
meetings of Mission Scotland '91,
May 25 - June 8.
Setting forth with characteristic
power and authority his simple
presentation of the ancient biblical
gospel, over a quarter -million peo-
ple came to hear him in Edinburgh,
Aberdeen and Glasgow, Scotland's
main cities. As in all the 82 coun-
tries where the evangelist has
preached, throngs walked forward
to commit themselves to Jesus
Christ as Lord. They numbered
more than 18,000.
Showing some evidence of his 72
years and four decades of demand-
ing Ministry, Dr. Graham was in
obviously good spirits, glad to be in
the ancestral home of both himself
and his wife Ruth. With almost fa-
therly kindness he declared to the
Scots forthrightly that although
their sins are a direct offence to
God, forgiveness and a whole, new
life are offered to all who tum to
Christ in genuine repentance. And
despite the low ebb in the life of the
Church in Scotland, the conclusion
of every meeting saw an immense
response that thrilled supporters
and confounded critics. Those re-
sponding represented all age groups
and classes.
The numbers apart, the kinds of
things the Graham people have
grown to expect took place - brok-
en lives and shattered marriages
were restored. As well, many rela-
tionships were restored, and doubt-
less this will go on as those who
made decisions will participate in
follow-up Discovery Groups.
Invited to Scotland by 1,500
Churches of nearly every Christian
denomination, the reception was
far different from the one the Gra-
ham team experienced in 1955, the
last time they were there. The pre-
viously hostile press and other me-
dia obviously amazed Billy Gra-
ham with their kind and generous
reporting of the Crusade.
With his usual humility Billy
Graham made it clear to the
crowds that "I have no supernatu-
ral powers to help you. You are
not coming to Billy Graham but to
Christ". He then went on to ex-
plain that what was taking place
resulted from the prayers of many
thousands of people the world
over.
The effects of the Crusade were
felt not only in the three large
football stadiums where Dr. Gra-
ham was preaching but on the
North Sea Oil Rip, in hospitals
and prisons and in 85 live link
centres where the meetings were
carried by live radio and television
links.
This reporter has now experi-
enced five Billy Graham Crusades
in Canada and the United King-
dom over a period of almost 40
years. Still it is cause for awe to
see God so obviously at work
through his humble servant. Lives
are transformed so quietly that at
first it is difficult to believe it is
ha ning. Now Christian leaders
are looking forward to see the out -
workings of this great event.
