Pinery Provincial Park makes effort to re-establish wild lupine GRAND BEND - Efforts to re- establish the wild lupine, Luinus pereimis, in Pinery Provincial Park near Grand Bend, bring back the endangered helpd d a ner Blue butterfly. The lupine is the sole larval food plant for the butter- fly.University of Guelph geography ProKir.o Miyanishi and graduate student Anna Boyonoski are studying the population dynam- ics of the lupines to provide infor- mation on appropriate strategies for increasing lupine populations in the The once -abundant wild lupine is now found in only a few sparse sties in the park. It generally grows in dry, open habitats such as oak sa- vannas In eastern North America, which range form Georgia to Owen Sound, Ontario. The butterfly's decline has coin- cided with the lupine's decline in southern Ontario. Populations of the Kamer Blue butterfly are in trouble throughout North America, and the two remaining Canadian populations in Pork Franks and St. Williams, Ontario are considered endangered. The pale blue butterfly with a one -inch wing span disap- peared from the Pinery in the early 1980s. Sine 1985, thousands of lupines have been planted in the park each year, but have hada low success rate. Although the seeds germinate well, the plants die over the summer. A number of factors' -- overgrazing by deer, drought, competition from other plants and the park's tree -planting and fire- suppressionpolicy -- have prob- ably conibuted to the lupine's de- cline, she says. Lupines grow in poor soils and are nitrogen -fixing plants, which means they build up nitrogen in the soil. they are prone to natural cycles and have special relation- ships with other species, says Ter- ry Crabe, the park's visitor servic- es and resource management specialist. Ants, for example, are important for spreading lupine seeds. Boyonoski's goal is to find out what is causing the plants to die and to make recommendations on lupine site plantings and treat- ments. So far, prescribed burnings in the park have had the most ben- eficial effect on the lupine. Fire is a natural aspect of the oak savanna environment, which makes up half of the 2,500 -hectare park, says Miyanishi. A savanna is a grassland with scattered trees and shrubs providing less than 50 Krcent canopy cover. Burning helps prevent canopy closure by the trees and helps maintain di sity of herbaceous species. 'the park is currently trying to restore the savanna, through burnings and tree cutting Such habitat cted manipulation Pinery,,meas- ures in the Krn aer Ba ue We t try he south of the Pinery and St. W' - liams will be the only hope for the lupines and the 1Carner Blue but- terfly in Ontario, because popula- tions of both species in unprotect- ed areas are under threat by development.
