Baton twirlers parade hit
By y Lewis
FRANKS MUTH, MI
GAN - 120,000 people lined
streets of Frankenmuth June
watch the annual Bavarian Pared
That's probably not unusual,
what was different was the
that the parade included some
cal talent.
Among the 116 entries of bands,
floats, Vietnam and Desert Storm
veterans, marched members of the
Exeter Elites and St. Marys and
Stratford Starlettes baton twirlers.
The clubs combined to form a
group of 50 young'Wt men. Head-
ing up the procession carrying the
flags were five members repre-
senting Exeter. Melanie Seip,
Laura Cooper, Tracy Maxwell,
Tiffany and Chrystal Taylor, have
been working hard for the past
year in preparation for the event.
Once a week, the girls, ranging in
age from 8-11, head for practice
at Exeter Public School, wh
their coaches teach them dan
modelling and marching.
"It's pretty easy," says Seip,
ten -year-old, grade five studen
"Even boys can do it."
Sandy Kechnie and Sue Maddoc
have been coaching the Elites
the past year. Twelve months ag
they applied for the Bavarian P
rade, to give the girls a taste of
big time. Kechnie, who also tear
es in St. Marys, got together wi
the Stratford coacnes who decided
CHI- to enter a combined unit. Litpro
the Management and Ellison Travel
8, to volunteered as sponsors, and the
e. entourage was set.
but "The girls really had a lot of fun,"
fact said Kechnie. "But they had to put
lo- up with the heat and a long wait."
The parade circuit was two and a
half miles long, but the girls •were
scheduled as the 96 act in line. It
meant an extra mile and a half walls
just to get to the starting line, as
well as a two hour wait. The girls
had'cipated a two or three mile
walk; but not four.
"It was the biggest parade I've
ever seen," said nine-year-old
Cooper. "It was really fun and we
made a lot of friends."
Most of the girls, began in the
program onlya g
they've had such fun, they definite-
ly plan to continue.
re In addition to parades, the Elites
ce, enter several strict baton competi-
tions. The batons must be kept per -
a fectly clean at all times, as do the
twirlers and their shoes. They com-
pete in solos, ducts, military style
k marching and, when they get really
for confident, they attempt these with
batons that have the ends lit with

the "Our coaches are really good,"
h- said Seip. "Some day we'll do it;
th when they teach us."

If you're like
most people, you'll
look at this and
think rape.
Well, think again.
Because sexual
assault isn't only
rape. It's any
unwanted act of a
1 sexual nature
imposed by one
person on another.
And If you think
it's always a dark
alley and a violent
stranger, you're
wrong again.
More than half of
all sexual assaults
of women are
committed by men
they know.
It can occur on
a date. Between
friends. Even
between husband
and wife.
So most people
don't think of it as
a crime. And often
It goes unreported.
But attitudes
must change.
Because against
our will is against
the law.
If your life has
been affected by
sexual assault, find
out what can be
done. Contact a
sexual assault
service. Or talk to
someone you trust.
Men must under-
stand that sexual
assault is a crime.
Maybe then
they'll think twice
about it.
