Sunday, they lost 18-13 to visit- ing Lakeside and Wednesday they were edged 13-12 by host Strath- roy in Great Lakes Senior Baseball action.' The week wasn't a disappointment however as the Express easily beat Seaforth 18-1 last Tuesday. "We're averaging 10 or 11 runs a game but we're still losing," said coach Joe Fulop whose team dropped to 3-5. "I've been trying a lot of differ- ent people at different positions," he added. Outfielders Don MacDonald and Dave Shaw recently returned to the lineup and Shaw has been doing some relief pitching. Pitching is where the problem hes for both the Express and their opposition. "It just seems ours hasn't settled in," said Fulop. Kevin Drager has been starting most games with Shaw and Scot Russell relieving. Fulop has 'also used rookie Scot Davidson and Marty Merner. But Paul Gilmour hasn't been throwing and he's a quality starter. Sunday against Lakeside, Exeter held a 10-1 lead after three innings but the visitors hammered Shaw for 11 hits including a pair of doubles before Russell came on in the sev- enth and he gave up nine runs. On a bright note, the Exeter bats were humming in the third inning as Darcy Martin andgBarry back- to-backBayn- ham started doubles with ohne out. with Designated hitter Walt Parkinson and Marty Menier singled and Shaw hit a home nm. That, com- bined with a pair of walks and a fielders' choice, saw the Express score seven runs in the third frame. At the plate, Shaw not only had a homer but a fust inning double and another two -bagger in the seventh. The fourth inning was a tough one for the Express as they left the bases loaded. Strathroy 13, Express 12 Exeter built a comfortable 8-1 Lead at the end of the first inning but host Strathroy y chipped away at the large difference and handed the Express the loss. In the Exeter half of the opening inning, Kerry Hedden, Martin, Schade and Drager all had singles. But the biggest hit of the inning came when Terry Guenther up from the Co-op Juniors, ripped a home Express 18, Seaforth 1 The rivalry between these two teams continued but this time it was Exeter. winning in a big, big way. The two teams have split their previous games, 8-7 for Seaforth and 13-12 for Exeter. But last Tuesday night in Sea - forth, the Express took advantage of five Seaforth errors to score sev- en runs in the seventh inning. At the plate. Shaw had a throe -ton homer in the fust and added a dou- ble in the sixth. Basepaths: In the game against Seaforth, the Express were dealt el ht walks, throe of those to Rob Dickey... We should have a better record," he added The hosts got rolling in the first inning when Chris Smith lead off with a double and scored on a single by Paul Smith. Steve Nix- on and Jeff Hirtzell also had base hits in the opening frame. Lucan struggled early in the season but has been improving as the summer goes on.
