Local Cadets honoured By Rhonda k4Vandeworp HURON PARK - Each year, the Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps offers summer courses for individuals who have displayed exceptional work in their local corps. This summer, Brent Jesney and Dwayne Fink- beiner, two cadets from the Huron and Middlesex branch, have been selected to participate. Jesney has been accepted into the basic parachuting course in Edmonton Alberta. If he com- pletes the six-week course which involves a two-week training peri- od in Petawawa, a seven day break to tour Alberta, and three weeks of intense instruction on parachuting, Jesney will be awarded with the Royal Canadian Army's parachut- ing wings. This honour is not a cadet award, but instead a military achievement sponsored by the Ca- nadian forces. As a result, he will be allowed to keep his wings whcn he advances to the forces. The parachuting course has been a goal for Jesney ever since he joined the cadet corps five years ago. Greg Pfaff, an officer for Hu- ron and Middlesex corps and a past participant in the parachuting course, said Jesney could not have achieved his dream without hard work and dedication. Moth Jesney and Finkbeiner were selected from the local army corps to represent Huron and Middlesex at the area headquarters in London, and after a successful inspection their names and records were sent to the regional headquarters in Trenton for further research. Because of the physical aspect of Jesney's course, a test in fitness was required. Four males and one fe- male had advanced to the London level. Since only two males and one female could qualify, a physi- cal challenge was necessary. Jes- ney was one of the chosen boys, but that does not mean he is fin- ished with physical examinations. Upon arrival at the Airborn Training Centre in July, Jesney and all other cadets arc required to run four miles under 32 minutes, in ad- dition to a dramatically increasing the number of consecutive sit-ups, push-ups and chin-ups compared to the regional try -outs. If he docs not fulfill all of the requirements, Jes- ney will be discharged and sent home. The nature of Dwayne Finkbeiner's course is different from Jesney's. Finkbeiner has been selected to par- ticipate in a one-month cultural program in Germany. The course will include tours of military and historical sites throughout Germa- ny, in addition to specific courses on German politics, geography, his- tory, and military. The emphasis placed on the se- lection of cadets for this course is not physical strength or endurance, but instead past course records, one's standing in the local corps, and recommendations. Finkbeiner is the first cadet from the Huron and Middlesex branch to ever be accepted for this course. Finkbeiner will attend a pre - course at Petawawa to learn basic German, and then will fly to the European country on July 12. Jcsncy and Finkbeiner, who both hold high standings in Huron Park's army cadet corps, wish to continue serving the Royal Canadian Army after they complete their training at this level. After his 19th birthday, Jesney plans become a . cadet in- structor and then move on to the Canadian forces. Finkbeiner's aspi- rations are to become an architectu- ral engineer for the army.
