"It is difficult to find money for the athletic program,". said princi- pal Joe Wooden at Wednesday night's annual athletic awards ban- quet. "It's difficult to put more money into athletics and less into academ- ics," he added. When the teams begin practice next fall, athletic Ron Bogart said there will once again be no money for athletics so student -athletes will have to do fund-raising. But Bogart said South Huron sell has a very good athletic pro- gram. "It's been a very successful year at our school. You'd have to go a long way to find a better athletic program," said Bogart. This year there were four Huron - Perth champions as the senior boys cross-country, girls field hockey, junior badminton and junior boys soccer teams came home with the top spots in the conference. The field hockey team also went. to the provincial final tournament after winning WOSSA. Individual- ly, Dave Schwindt won the Huron - Perth senior boys javelin competi- tion and his junior counterpart Randy Johnson was third in the province. On the track, Molly McClure went to the OFSAA regionals and she was joined by shotputier Jay Hippem. Surprisingly there was not a win- ner of the Panther Award. This award is for outstanding achieve- ment and contribution to athletics at South Huron throughout high school by a graduating student. "We did nbt feel there was a wor- thy winner," said Bogart. - However he did add, "being in- volved and participating is still the most important thing." Top athletes - Randy Johnson, top junior boy; Molly McClure, top jun- ior girl and Kim Lingard, top senior girl collected their awards on Wednesday night at the high school. Basketball stars - Leigh Rose, seated; along with Pat bucharme and Scot Russell were top winners of individual awards for their ef- forts fforts to the basketball program. Fremlin hits Greys to win EXETER - Centrefielder Sandi Fremlin went 3 -for -3 at the plate last Tuesday night as the Exeter Greys defeated Dublin 11-4 in Hu- ron Perth Women's Fastball League action. The win upped the Greys record to 3-0. Monday they travelled to Crediton to take on the team _that eliminated them from the playoffs last year. Against Dublin, Fremlin started her big night with an rbi triple in the first inning which scored catcher Kendra Arthur who had led off the game with a single. Exeter added two more in the second as Patti Down doubled, scored on Brenda Bell's base hit Centennials and Bell came home after a pair of walks. Fremlin had a solo home run in the third inning and both she and Lisa Henderson walked in' the fifth and came home thanks to a base hit from Down and more walks. With a slim 6-4 lead at the bot- tom of the sixth inning, the Greys exploded for five big runs. Arthur got her second hit of the game to start the rally, Henderson walked, Gayle Beuerman, Fremlin, Cherie Carter and Down all connected with singles. Down started on the mound for Exeter, striking out six bauers be- fore being replaced in the fifth in- ning by Bcuerman who fanned four. Continued from page 14 McEwan was replaced in net by Gary Wilson. Nothers added an- other goal soon after the change, but McEwan scored on a pretty headball from Chansamone to keep the Centennials in it. With twenty minutes remaining, the game turned ugly, with tempers flaring in several instances. After an altercation with three London players, McEwan was ejected from the game with a red card. One bright spot for Exeter, was the return of forward Charlie Wise from the injured list. Wise had missed the previous three games af- ter being injured in the season opener against Taxandria in Arko- na. "We've really missed him up front," said Lord. "It'll be good to have him back." The next game for the Centenni- als will be Sunday, June 16, when they host Wallaceburg. Powei'nrtde I MOP 111W31.1W HOCKEY TECHNtQUES LTD.
