It was the fust tournament of the year for both the Exeter Kicks under - 12 and Exeter Hot- spur otspur under -15 teams, with the Kicks bringing home the champi- onship. The Kicks got off to a great start in their opening match of the round-robin Saturday, as they faced Wallaceburg. Trevor Boer- sma led the team with a hatrick in a 4-2 victory, and Luke Sims add- ed a single. The team then faced Sarnia Dante, which gave the Kicks some trouble. "We really didn't play welt," said coach John Rasenberg. "We were a little flat against both Dante and Moore Township." Despite dominating the game, Exeter had trouble finding the net, missing some key opportunities including two penalty shots. Boersma scored his fourth of the day in a 1-1 tie. In their final Saturday game, the Kicks still had trouble scoring, de- spite holding edge ldin the ed a in shots. Greg Geoffrey scored to give the team a 1-0 victory, and a berth in the finals on Sunday. In the final, Exeter again faced Wallaceburg, but this time the shooters were fired up. The Kicks dominated the game in every aspect to win the game and the tourna- ment. David Farquhar notched a hatrick, and singles were chipped in by Luke Sims, Geoff Mayer and Jeff MacLean. The Exeter Kicks will be off to Kincardine this weekend, in hopes of winning the Legion Tournament. Due to a lack of under -15 tourna- ments, Exeter Hotspur competed in the under -16 age category. In addi- tion, teams were permitted to bring three players who were seventeen. Although at an obvious disadvan- tage physically, the locals did well, splitting their two games. Exeter faced ABB, a team com- biner! from three Sarnia clubs, for their fust match. The game was fairly even, with Hotspur en, oying the better scoring opportunities. Late in the game, winger Sean McCann was pulled down inside the; malty box, and Marty De- Bruyn converted the penalty shot to put Exeter ahead. The team played well defensive- ly, and held on for the win. In the second game, Hotspur faced the host squad from Moore Township. Sean McCann scored to give Exeter a lead, but the opposi- tion came back to score two in the first half. Late in the second half, the hot weather and tough competition seemed to take its toll, as Moore Township scored four quick goals to win 6-1 "They did very well all things considered," said coach Ray Lewis.
