GRIP takes off
TORONTO - More than 59,000
contracts for the federal -provincial
Gross Revenue Insurance Plan
(GRIP) were sold in Ontario, ac-
• cording to the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food's assistant
general manager of crop insurance
and stabilization, Greg Brown.
Contracts are assigned to individual
crops, not individual producers,
which means that an estimated
25,000 farmers enrolled in the pro -
Farmers were eager to sign up
for the program. We're very pleased
with the response to the program,"
said Brown.
GRIP is a three -party income in-
surance program, involving pay-
ments from the federal and provin-
cial governments, and producers.
"Sixty-seven percent of the pro-
ducers bought both market revenue
and crop insurance, so they will be
able to enjoy the full protection of-
fered by both," said Brown.
Crop insurance sales are up sil-
nificantly from last year, said
Brown. Sales for canola are up 69
percent; soybeans 15 percent; corn
eight percent and spring grain, sev-
en
ev-
e t.
Crop insurance staff promoted
the program at about 100 meetings
and spoke to 9,000 farmers from
February to May. They visited indi-
vidual farmers to fill out applica-
tions and collected a deposit of $1
per acre as a deposit under the mar-
ket revenue component and another
dollar under the crop insurance
component.

Hey days • Three local farm equipment dealers (CG Farm Supply, Hyde Brothers, and Carters Farm
Equipment) gathered at the Mac McEwan farm just outside Hensall on Thursday to demontrate the lat-
est in machinery for mowing, raking, inverting, baling and wrapping hay. Above, distributor Wayne Barber
shows how a Kuhn wrapper bundles up a green bale in airtight plastic wrap as an alternative to silage.
However, because the hay season came about a week early this year, many farmers were busy in their
own fields and attendance at the show was not as good as hoped.
Grand champs - The overall winners of the Hensall Calf Club grand final contest were Lyle Hemmingway
of Brussels (right) who received the Times Advocate award and Valerie Ryan of Dashwood who won the
Hensall District Co -Op reserve champion award.
