Times -Advocate, June 12, 1991 Page 9 GRIP takes off TORONTO - More than 59,000 contracts for the federal -provincial Gross Revenue Insurance Plan (GRIP) were sold in Ontario, ac- • cording to the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food's assistant general manager of crop insurance and stabilization, Greg Brown. Contracts are assigned to individual crops, not individual producers, which means that an estimated 25,000 farmers enrolled in the pro - Farmers were eager to sign up for the program. We're very pleased with the response to the program," said Brown. GRIP is a three -party income in- surance program, involving pay- ments from the federal and provin- cial governments, and producers. "Sixty-seven percent of the pro- ducers bought both market revenue and crop insurance, so they will be able to enjoy the full protection of- fered by both," said Brown. Crop insurance sales are up sil- nificantly from last year, said Brown. Sales for canola are up 69 percent; soybeans 15 percent; corn eight percent and spring grain, sev- en ev- e t. Crop insurance staff promoted the program at about 100 meetings and spoke to 9,000 farmers from February to May. They visited indi- vidual farmers to fill out applica- tions and collected a deposit of $1 per acre as a deposit under the mar- ket revenue component and another dollar under the crop insurance component. However, because the hay season came about a week early this year, many farmers were busy in their own fields and attendance at the show was not as good as hoped. Grand champs - The overall winners of the Hensall Calf Club grand final contest were Lyle Hemmingway of Brussels (right) who received the Times Advocate award and Valerie Ryan of Dashwood who won the Hensall District Co -Op reserve champion award.
