EXETER - Quick, what travels
279 miles but actually goes no-
where? The answer is an exercise
bicycle in a bank. No, it's not a rid-
dle but the result of a fitness chal-
lenge between three of Exeter's ri-
val banks last Wednesday for
Fitness Week.
Scotiabank, the Bank of Mon-
treal, and the Royal Bank all set ex-
ercise bicycles up in their branches
and invited staff and customers to
keep those pedals turning through-
out the day. The branch with the
most miles [or kilometres, depend-
ing on model] on the odometer at
the end of the day was declared the
winner.
Taking top spot was the Bank of
Montreal, who racked up an im-
pressive 130 miles on their bike.
Branch manager Les Hills said he
was surprised that his branch won,
but mainly because false reports
had been coming in all day saying
the other branches were ahead.
Of course, once the other kilo-
metre -readout bikes were adjusted
to match Montreal's old-fashioned
miles, then the truth came out.
Barb Ratz at Scotiabank said that
while their branch came in second,
she was sure they should have won.
Their 113 'mile tally wasn't that
far behind the winners, she said,
and the branch's attempt to bribe
customers into contributing to the
total should have counted for some-
thing.
"We gave them lemonade," con-
fessed Ratz.
The Royal Bank came in a distant
third with 36 miles on the c1otk.
Sharon McNeilly at the branch ad-
mitted that while the day started
wen, they had a hard time finding
people to keep those cranks turn-
ing.
"That's the trick, you have to
keep it going all the time," said
McNeilly. "But we had fun."
In all, the exercise bikes in the
three branches totalled of 279 miles
of pedalling Wednesday, meaning
the equivalent of a bike ride almost
to Ottawa.
Hopscotch - Stopping for a break to play hopscotch during the Fit-
ness Challenge in Hensall last;Wednesday were Betty Grenler and
Jason Bengough.
Any participant will do . Joanne Bengough brought along a little mo-
ral support In the Hensall Fitness Challenge. Sandy, a young Chi-
huahua, didn't want to wear the official sticker though.

Bank of Montreal shows how it's done.

Scotiabank - Even the custom -
ters were contributing during the
bank's fitness challenge, with
Deb Wood taking a few tums of
the pedals after banking at Sco-
tiabank.
