Lucan beats Exeter, even record
LUCAN - After slipping to 1-4
in their first five games, Lucan
has regrouped and now have a 4-
4 record in the Western Junior
Baseball League.
Their biggest conquest came
Sunday afternoon when they beat
the defending league Champion
Exeter Co -Op Juniors 6-4.
"We hung on, it was a very in-
teresting game," said Lucan
coach Walt Parkinson.
Exeter had a good chance to
take the lead late in the game
when they loaded the bases in the
eighth inning but Scot Russell
flyed out and Fred Gregus could
bring home the runners. The visi-
tors also left two runners strand-
ed in the ninth.
It was the third straight win for
Lucan who travelled to St. Marys
tonight.
"They've got all kinds of talent
but they lack experience and they
get down when they make a bad
play," said Parkinson.
Lucan's best inning came in the
third when they banged out three
hits, and combined with a walk
and a hit batter, scored three
runs.
In the fifth, Exeter catcher
Dave Schwindt doubled and then
Scot Russell ripped a long fly
ball that soared over the left field
fence foul by a few inches. Rus-
sell struck out and Lucan man-
aged to get the side out without
having Schwindt score.
"That was definitely in our fa-
vour," said Parkinson of the foul
ball, "It might have tied it up."
Lucan had several new faces in
the lineup and Parkinson it
seemed to help as the team not
only beat Exeter last week but on
Thursday got by Saltford 10-8
and hammered Listowel 12-2 last
Tuesday.
"Some of the boys who were
going to be regulars packed it in
so I went with those who were go-
ing to be there all the time," said
Parkinson.
Exeter 10, Dashwood 0
Despite the score, there was a
note of disappointment for the Ex-
eter squad last Wednesday night.
Russell bad a no-hitter going
until the eighth inning when Greg
Agnew connected with a two sin-
gle. Other than that, Russell was
strong as he struck out 11 batters,
including retiring the side himself
in the fifth inning.
Offensively, Exeter took advan-
tage of thrid walks and a few
passed balls in the first inning and
Schwindt clubbed a couple of
runs to put the game out of reach
early.
Dashwood 4, Listowel 3
The first game of a double -
hitter in Dashwood on Sunday
saw the host team come up with
their second win of the.season as
they beat Listowel 4-3.
Dashwood . scored, early when
Greg Agnew tripled in the bottom
of the first inning and he came in
on Steve Farquhar's sacrifice
ground out.
Men's fastball league action
Exeter edged by St. Marys Nighthawks
By Fred Groves
EXETER • Three runs in the
first inning hurt the Exeter Roy-
als Thursday night as they lost a
close 6-5 decision to the St. Mar-
ys Nighthawks in South Perth
Men's Fastball League action.
The Nighthawks, champions of
the Embro League a year ago,
got to Royals' starting pitcher
Dan Heywood early as he gave
up a hit, walked one batter and
hit another.
"Five runs should win, but they
scored three runs on one hit in
the fust inning," said Exeter
coach Graham Nesbitt.
Exeter has proven all year they
have the offence to keep up with
any team and came back in their
half of the second to tie the game
at 3-3.
It was 4-3 for the home team
after four and tied again, this
time 5-5 after five innings. A
double from St. Marys Tony
McEwan scored the winning run
in the top of,the seventh.
"We can't win them all," noted
Nesbitt whose team lost just!i$ nt
second regular schedule game or I
the year.
"They're tough, they're a scrap-
pyhitting team," he said of the
Nighhawks.
The three runs the Royals got
in the second started when third
baseman Steve Neil led off with
a double and scored when Brian
Noyes connected with his second
double of the year.
Jim Lewis got on base when Si
Marys first baseman Scott Rols-
ton bobbled the ball. Errors and a
passed ball saw Noyes score and
Mike Desjardine singled to score
Lewis.
In the Royals' half of the fourth,
Jim Allison singled and quickly
moved to third on a couple of
passed balls and scored on Hey -
wood's single.
Exeter added one more in the
fifth when Mike Neil led off with
a double and scored on brother
Steve's double. Steve had one of
his better nights at the plate going
3 -for -5.
St. Marys was helped by a not
too steady Royals defence which
saw them commit five errors.
"It was our sloppiest defensive
game. It was sloppy on both
sides," said Nesbiu. "The surface
(of the diamond) didn't help us."
Heywood was knocked off the
hill in the fifth and gave way to
Dennis Carty who not only made
a fine defensive play off of a bunt,
but had a clean base hit as well.
Derwyn Hodgins came on to
pitch the last two innings and
struck out four of the six batters
he faced. For the Nighhawks, Ja-
son Zvonkin started but was re-
placed in the second by lefthander
Scott Brookshaw.
Royals 6, Merchants 0
Hodgins struck out 17 and went
3 -for -4 at the plate last Tuesday
night as the visiting Royals
blanked the Tavistock Merchants
6-0.
It was the fourth shutout in six
regular season games for the Roy-
als.
Exeter got on the board in the
third inning when Darren Neil and
Heywood singled and both scored
on Nesbitt's base hit. In the fourth,
Scott Brintnell got to second on an
error and came home on Hodgins'
single.
Things were quiet until the eighth
when Brent Dawson doubled and
easily scored when Hodgins blasted
a triple. The hitting barrage kept up
in the ninth when Desjardine got to
first on an error, went to second on
Continued on page 19
In the fourth Farquhar
and scored on Jody Masse's
Dashwood got two more runs in the
seventh on an error, a walk and.*
sacrifice ground out.
Pitcher Jason Heywood, caning
on in relief, got in trouble in the
seventh when he walked one batter,
hit another but struck three in a row
to finish the game.
Listowel 10, Dashwood 4
Although Dashwood scored four
runs in the first inning in the sec-
ond game of the double -hitter, they
were beaten 12-4 in the shortended
contest.
DashwoOd coach Steve Memer
said the Seine had to be halted in
the sixth inning as both teams were
involved in a bench clearing alter-
cation.
In the fust inning, Daswhood's
Agnew led off with a walk, Scott
Parsons was safe on a bunt and
then Dan Masse walked. Jason
Heywood had a home run to cleat
the bases.

face at fust base on Sunday as

of innings...Kevin Leitch a member
