Senior baseball action
Express drop three close ones
LONDON - It was certainly a
tough week for the Exeter Express,
as they dropped all three of their
Great Lakes
League games.
All of the games were very
Senior Baseball
close, starting with a 9-6 loss to
visiting London Kings last Tues-
day night and then a 8-7 loss to
Seaforth on Friday and an identical
-7 defeat at the hands of the
in London on Sunday.
Exeter travel to Tillsonburg this
eekend for a tournament and take
eir 1-3 league record against vis-.
ing Seaforth on June 11.
London 8, Exeter 7
On Sunday, the Express left two
runners stranded in the ninth in-
ning', 4 couldn't get the tieing run
theptate. •
thi inth, with one out, Kerry
Redden, Kevin Hern and D'Arcy
Martin all singled but Martin was
tossed out at second on a fielder's
choice that put Barry Baynham on.
Hedden scored and Baynham stole
second but he was left stranded
theM and Hern left at third.
Exeter's best offensive inning
name in the . fifth when they plated
ur runs and took a commanding
3 lead. In. that inning, Rob Dick -
walked followed by singles off
the bats of Redden, Hem and Mar-
tin. Baynham's sacrifice scored a
run.
London came back and got three
• ;nuts' in the sixth inning off of three
straight singles and a triple. The
Kings got more hits and left the
bases loaded.
Seaforth 8, Exeter 7
Friday night in Seaforth, an error,
a single and a sacrifice fly helped
the host Merchants come up with a
ofie-run victory.
The Express took a 3-0 lead in
the top of the first inning as Pete
Heeny reached base on an error,
Baynham singled, Hedden got on
on a fielders choice, Paul Drager
singled and Dave Hayter had a base
hit.
In the sixth, Hayter reached base
on an error, stole second and came
home thanks to Brian Rivard's sin-
gle. The seventh frame saw Paul
Gilmour single and he came home
when Heddenrlaunched a home run.
Mart/with, yd Merrier

gamy and he scored on a base hit
by Jeff Wairen.
London 8, Exeter 6
Last Tuesday night in Exeter, the
teams were tied 5-5 after three in-
nings but the Express couldn't get
the bats going later in the middle
innings as they didn't score their
last run until the seventh.
Dickey scored Exeter's first run
when he walked, stole both second
and third and came home on a
passed ball. Exeter got another in
the second as Baynham singled and
both Hern and Martin were hit by
pitches.
Steve Meurer and Rivard both
walked to score runs. Exeter scored
again in the seventh on a walk and
a base hit.
Safe - Exeter's Dave Hayter was safe sliding into third base last Tuesday against London but the visiting
Kings managed to beat the Express 8-6.

SUDBURY - Third in the prov-
ince isn't bad at all but Randy
Johnson sure would have been
happy if he got a little more on
his throw.
The South Huron District High
School student brought home the
bronze medal in the junior jave-
lin division from the Ontario
Federation of Schools Athletic
Association track and field cham-
pionships.
"l'm happy with it, but I was so
close to the gold," said Johnson.
His throw of 56.74 meters fell
very short of the winning toss of
57.50 meters by Orillia's Jamie
Schweitzer. Derek McMillan of
London Laurier was second at
57.00.
"I threw consistent 56's but 1
couldn't get a 57," said Johnson
who has a personal best of 56.90.
A year ago he brought home the
silver medal from OFSAA in the
midget division with a much lighter
javelin.
Johnson said even Schweitzer
seemed a little surprised with his
effort that won him the gold medal.
"You should have seen the look
on his face."

Reaction to Sneaker
Police varied
Have you ever been a
• sneaker policeman.
No?
Well let me tell you
about it.
On Friday I volunteered my
services to go around town and
blow my whistle at those who
didn't remember that it was
Sneaker Day.
It's kind of funny to go and see the mixed reaction from those who
willingly participated and others who wouldn't have anything to do
with it.
Highlights of my day, which was spent with rec director Lynne
Farquhar and Karen Buchanan, the pool supervisor in Huron Park,
included a trip to the Exeter Public School.
Sandy Bergmann, you certainly are a good sport. Skipping in
front of your class set a very good example that staying fit is impor-
tant. Obviously you've done a lot of skipping.
For those ladies who work on the upper floor of the Bank of Mon-
treal, next year the sneaker police won't be so kind. And finally a tip
of my hat to those at Big 0 for not only wearing your sneakers but
shorts as well and raising $100. Good job!
My favourite line of the day came from a guy wearing cowboy
boots in an upper hallway of Big 0, when we said it was sneaker
day, he simply replied his boots were snake skin and snakes 'sneak'
around. Ha, ha.
The National Fitness Week activities had lots of participants at
the schools through Moga Madness at SHDHS to the giant aerobic
class held by Exeter Public School.
However, the Heritage Walk only had about 50 people take part.
Those that did went back to the Rec Centre and watched some crazy
antics by five corporate teams. This year's winner, and they have the
sneaker trophty to prove it are the Times -Advocate. Congratulations
to Ray Lewis, Deb Lord and her two nieces Anita Finkbeiner and
Rhonda Vandeworp.
Other particpants were the Big V, Murphy's Landing, Ellison
Travel and the Big 0, I hear a good time was had by all.

WeaiIng•number 4 for the San Jose Sharks, Jean Beliveau.
Don't laugh, there is about a one in a billion it could have hap-
pened.
The former captain of the Montreal Canadiens, one of the greatest
centremen ever to play the game, was placed on the Canadiens' list
as being eligible for the NHL expansion draft last Thursday. •
Mind you neither Minnesota or the San Jose Sharks took him but
it's nice to dream a little isn't it.
Exeter's Rob Nichol, a fellow employee here at the Times -
Advocate, is a big Canadiens fan and I bet he was grinning from
ear -to -ear with the thought of Beliveau lacing up the skates again.
Former Canadiens' Yvon Cournoyer, Ken Dryden along with the
Philadelphia Flyers' Bill Barber and Bobby Clarke and New York
Islanders' blueliner Dennis Potvin conjure up an image of a dream
team.
A few months ago I wrote a column on what I thought would be a
perfect NHL starting six. How about an all-time comeback team.
Certainy if Believeau decided to come back, he's nearly 60, it would
be a remarkable accomplishment.
But one guy who still catches the eye of draft bidders is Guy La-
fleur. After leaving the Canadies and taking a leave of absence he
resurfaced with the New York Rangers and then went to Quebec.
Thursday he was drafted by the North Stars. I guess you can't
keep a good man down.
The :Euler. Lawn Bowling Club has stiatiabOritodter season
and today will be holding their first tottrarteat-SIE the local greens
beginning at 10:30 p.m. A pairs tournament honed *Abe' Legion
will be held June 19.
A couple of notes to pass on, first, congratulations to the Exeter
Royals for going up against some tough competition on the week-
end and bringing home over $600 at the tournament in Mel-
bourne...Bill Chipchase and Tom McCann both finished with 95
points and split the first and second prize money in the Exeter Molt-
ing Hawks hockey pool. Bill Hodge was a close third with 90
points. The local club raised nearly $1,000...Next week, Ray Lewis
will be handling most of the sports as I'm off for a weeks vacation/
honeymoon.
