Senior baseball action
Express rally late to win opener
STRATHROY - Trailing 2-0 at
the top of the ninth inning, the Ex-
eter Express rallied to beat host
Strathroy 6-3 last Tuesday night in
their opening game of the Great
Lakes Senior Baseball League.
Neither team could get any of-
fence rolling until the sixth frame
when the hosts got a home run and
added a couple of base hits to go
up 2-0.
Exeter struggled at the plate in
the earlier innings and the only of-
fence they managed was when
Kerry Hedden walked in the first
inning and stole second, but the
Express couldn't move him
around.
Jeff Warren had a single in the
sixth inning but was tossed out at
second when Pete Heeney got on
with a fielders' choice. Exeter went
down in order in the second, third,
fourth and fifth innings.
But they really came to life in the
ninth inning, sending 11 batters to
the plate and connecting with four
hits to go with their three timely
walks.
Rob Dickey started the rally
when he walked and Hedden belted
a double to score a run. Kevin
Drager and catcher Darcy Martin
singled and Marty Merner and Bar-
ry Baynham walked. Dickey sin-
gled to drive in more runs.
Strathroy added one more in their
half of the ninth on a walk and a
single but it wasn't enough.
Kevin Drager started on the
mound for the Express and gave up
five hits while striking out six be-
fore giving way to Paul Gilmour in
the sixth who struck out five and
gave up just one hit.
