The Royals were scheduled to travel to Tavistock on Sunday but that was rained out and was sched- uled to be played last night. The next home game is Thursday when they host St. Marys Nighthawks at 9 a.m. Exeter trailed 4-1 late in the game against the A's but were able to wear down starting pitcher Rob Heckman and had little trouble against former Royals' hurler Greg Wise. Wise came on to pitch to first- baseman/coach Graham Nesbiu, who doubled but his three previ- ous trips to the plate struck out. "I was actually surprised they changed. The other guy (Heckman) got me three times. If it was me I would have waited for another bat- ter," said Nesbitt who hit a single which scored two runs. The offensive outburst started with one out when Kevin Lif,htfoot, Scott Brintnell and Jim Allison all reached base on infield hits. Dan Heywood walked to bring in one run and then with two out Jim Lew- is came up with his biggest hit of the year, a single through the hole at short to score another run. "Jim Lewis got a big hit in a tough situation. That's good for us," said Nesbitt. Mike Neil launched a triple to score Nesbiu and Lewis and Neil added a solo home run in the ninth inning. It was his second round - tripper of the season. Exeter, who lifted its league record to 5-1 have not had to come - from -behind to win yet this season. "It can't all be easy, we have to have some of that come -from - behind," said Nesbitt. Darren Neil started the game with a double but was gunned down by A's outfielder Jim Skinner when he tried to go all the way to third base. Exeter also added a run in the first inning when Allison walked, moved around on Darren Neil's sin- gle and came home on Heywood's base hit. Fullarton's biggest inning of the game was the fifth when they got three runs. Heckman and Greg Skinner singled, Dave Briggelaar was hit by a pitch, which saw the exit of starting Royals pitcher Hey- wood and then Dan Stroud tripled off of reliever Derwyn Hodgins. But Hodgins was nearly perfect the rest of the way as he struck out 14 of the 19 batters he faced. Jim Lewis ... key hit Defensively the Royals made two great plays in the bottom of the third when third baseman Rod Johnston snagged a hard hit line drive and just missed getting a dou- ble play. On the next play, Allison from his second base spot back- handed a grounder and easily got Jim Skinner. This weekend, the Royals travel to Melbourne to take part in a 20 - team tournament and face Merlin Friday night in their opener. "It will be tough. We need to see something different, we need some game under our belt," said Nesbitt. Base paths: Exeter sports a 6-1 record thanks in part to the hitting of first baseman Lightfoot who is 7 -of -22 for a .318 average...On the mound, Hodgins has handled the bulk of the load and has struck out 63 batters. Veteran defencemen Todd Hayter and Jamie Pearce, who played as overagers this past sea- son, were two of the recipients at this year's awards banquet. "They are two big reasons why we were where we were," said Lu - can coach Ken Needham. Brent Ladds, president of the Ontario Hockey Association was the guest speaker Friday night and said to Hayter and Peace, "it doesn't mean your career is over, there's lots of room in amateur hockey." Pearce took home the team's highest honor as the Most Valu- able Player while Hayter was named the Irish top defenceman for the 1990-91 season. Other win- ners were Greg DePrest as the leading scorer, Jeremy Jemec was the most improved player and Ja- son Wilson, the rookie -of -the - year. Goalie Dan Jenken, who always kept the team on an upbeat note and forward Andy Ross who had an outstanding post -season, were named co -winners of the trophy which is awarded to the player showing the most heart combined with sportsmanlike play. Jenken is headed to the Univer- sity of Guelph where hopefully he will become a regular on their bas- ketball team. With the graduation of Hayter and Pearce, the Irish will have to do a lot of recruiting over the summer to get some defensive help. Bogart to coach Woodstock Navy Vets WOODSTOCK - Exeter native Dave Bogart will have his work cut out for him this winter as he takes over the head coaching job of the Woodstock Navy Vets of the Niagara Junior C Hockey League. The Navy Vets were last in their league this past year with a 7-22-5 record, but Bogart is looking forward in building a winning club. "It's too early to really tell yet, the only thing I've done is meet with each returning player," said Bogart. "I wanted to find out what they were doing next year." "Some of the guys are pretty young and a lot of them want to try out for Junior B teams. That would give me an idea what to try and recruit for." Prior to that, he spent two seasons behind the bench of the Exeter Junior D Hawks. He said the challenge he faces in Woodstock, is similar to the one he tackled with the Hawks. As far as coaching university and junior hockey is concerned there is a difference. "In university we have guys that have played Major A and a couple of guys played professional." Bogan, whose father Ron guid- ed the Hawks to the 1976-77 OHA Junior D title, played Junior B hockey for Strathroy Blades and the University of Ohio and the Wilfrid Laurier University. The Irish for the third straight year, advanced to the league final and were again beaten. But some feel they are the glue which holds the Junior 'D' league together. "We appreciate over the year, the season this hockey club has had," said Ladds. Needham said a couple of highs during the season were hat tricks by rookie Paul O'Shea and defence - man Kevin Leitch. Lows were all the injuries and Needham thanked trainer Pat Riddell for her efforts all year long. Hockey in Lucan is a family tra- dition as not only indicated at the playing level with Todd and Tim Hayter but in the front office as well. Jim Freeman a long time organiz- er, supporter, manager of the club has passed the reigns over to his son Ken. "We were very pleased, two years ago to award him our gold stick," said Ladds of the senior Freeman for his many years of con- tribution to the sport.
