Victories send soccer teams to finals By Ray Lewis EXETER - For the first time in the history of soccer at SHDHS, both senior and junior boys teams advanced to the Huron -Perth fi- nals held yesterday in Stratford. Both teams faced Stratford Cen- tral, but at press time, games had yet to be completed. This will mark the third time in as many years that the senior kickers have qualified for the fi- nal, and for the third straight year faced Stratford. The seniors lost . both previous encounters, 4-1 in 1989 and 1-0 last year. Prior to that South Huron, hadn't played in the finals since 1986, when they lost 5-3 to Goderich after winning the school's only cham- pionship a year earlier against St. Marys. For the juniors it will mark only the second time in soccer's 23 year history at the school, that they have qualified for the finals. They lost 3-1 to Clinton in 1987. The seniors advanced to this year's final after defeating the vis- iting St. Marys Salukis, Friday af- ternoon in semi-final action. The Panthers kno :ked off the Mitch- ell Blue D wils in Mitchell, Wednesday, but gained home field advantage after St. Marys upset first place St. Mike's. On Friday, the Salukis scored midway through the first half to grab the lead, but it was short- lived as Pete McAllister evened things up only a minute later. The Panthers took advantage of a free kick, with Sean McFalls feeding McAllister who scored on the head ball. The game became very physi- cal with four players from St. Marys receivin? yellow cards and one player being ejected while South Huron picked up a yellow of their own. During the second half, the Panthers dominated and the pres- sure finally paid off as Dave Boersma scored his first goal of the season after some hard work High kicker - Panthers' Sisivay Sengkhounmany, left; and Mitch- ell's Joe Harris battle for the ball In Wednesday's junior game. and a beautiful cross by Sisivay Sengkhounmany pulled the goal- keeper out of position. South Huron held on to win the game 2-1. Wednesday's game against Mitchell was a typical grudge match with neither team able to score through regulation or over- time. The Panthers played an un- inspired game, but did manage some of the better scoring oppor- tunities. During the second half, Sengkhounmany rifled a shot that hit both post and crossbar but stayed out. After overtime, the teams went into a shoot-out with both teams selecting their five top shooters. Both teams scored on their first four shots, but after Mitchell shot wide on their fifth, Ryan Hem stepped up and fired home the winner. In junior action, the Panthers also qualified for the finals and they too required overtime. On Friday, the juniors travelled to Stratford Northwestern to play against the Huskies, - the only team to beat South Huron during the regular season. The Panthers were forced into a very physical game against the Huskies, who were yet undefeated. Stratford took it to the Pan- thers early on, but the defense held firm. As momentum began to shift South Huron seemed to have the better scoring opportu- nities but failed to capitalize. Both goalkeepers made some quality saves and the score re- mained nil at the end of'regula- tion. During overtime the Panthers again had some good chances, as both Sean McCann and Sivichay Sengkhoumany just missed on near breakaways. South Hwon dodged a few bul- lets of their own, including a save by Mark Lynn with less than a minute remaining. The sturdy defenseman snagged a ball out of mid-air just before it crossed the goal line, to force the game into a shoot-out. In the overtime penalty kicks, the Panthers scored three goals on their first four kicks while goalkeeper Darren Malcolm held the top Huskie shooters to only one goal. Scoring for South Hu- ron were Al McFalls, Jeff Lin- gard and Sengkhoumany. In quarter -final action the jun- ior Panthers hosted the Mitchell Blue Devils on Wednesday. The two teams split games earlier this season, and this game was much closer than the 4-1 score indi- cates. The Blue Devils drew first blood about five minutes into the game, when John Jordan split the defense and went in alone on goalkeeper Malcolm. The goal really put Exeter behind the eight 'ball, as they failed to mount much of an attack through the next 20 minutes. With time running out in the first half, Darrell Chappel came off the bench to ignite what would be a furious South Huron attack. Chappel stole the ball and carried down the wing where he beat the Mitchell goaltender on a blast from just inside the 18 yard box. ,South Huron came to life and `began to pepper the Mitchell keeper and less than a minute lat- er Trevor Taylor scored his first of two when he volleyed a shot into the net from thirty yards out. The second half began with the Blue Devils pulling out all the stops and forcing the Panthers deep in their own end. South Huron got goals from Taylor and Al McFalls to seal the victory. Girls' Soccer In girls soccer action the sen- iors had a successful week win- ning two league games. On Tuesday, the Panthers trav- elled to Clinton, beating the Red - men 1-0 on a goal by Becci Far- quhar. On Thursday, the seniors com- peted against Stratford North- westem winning 3-0. Nicole Gill scored two goals, one on a cross from Farquhar, while Stacey Rader added the other. In junior action the team won Tuesday against Clinton in a shoot-out. Carla Taylor and Jen McNeil marked the goals for South Huron. Thursday's game saw the jun- iors drop a 1-0 game to Stratford Northwestern.
