MPP returns to address Centralia College graduates HURON PARK - For the first time in Centralia College's 24 years of operation, a graduate returned to address the graduating class. Paul Klopp, Huron MPP and par- liamentary assistant to the minister of agriculture, was a member of the class of 1977 and he stood before the class of 1991 Thursday after- noon to offer his thoughts on agri- cultural education. "Back in '77 the situation was that good times were here," said Klopp, adding that worldwide food shortages convinced farmers and lending institutions that farms should not be afraid to borrow money to create large, efficient farms. No one realized, said Klopp, that land and commodity prices would tumble during the 1980s, leaving many farmers deep in debt. Nevertheless, Klopp said his edu- cation at CCAT was not wasted. He said the college offers the op- portunity for students to put theory into practice, and he said he was able to make use of that theory af- ter he graduated. With the farm situation as it is, Klopp said he was not afraid to seek off -farm income, even though he would rather be home on the farm. Klopp said his CCAT teachers probably weren't surprised that he ran as the NDP candidate in three elections. "I think they were surprised when I won. Hell, I was too," he said, laughing. In 1977, said Klopp, larger farms were taken for granted as the way of the future, confessing that he too dreamed of a 1,000 acre spread: but the MPP acknowledged that large farms work contrary to concerns for the environment and soil con- servation. Smaller farming operations should be possible and profitable, he claimed. "I don't believe for a minute there are too many farmers," said Klopp. Klopp also said he doesn't think f MdrTie,ea are try inw And enn rP. of people on the streets of Toronto who found food definitely too ex- pensive. What is too low is the price paid to farmers for their com- modities, he stated. Dr. J.C. Rennie, retiring from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, also addressed the graduates and told them the challenge for the 1990s is to remain optimistic about the future of agriculture. He said the agriculture sector is going to be coming under attack more frequent- ly for its affect on land, use of pes- ticides and other chemicals, and its treatment of animals. Rennie said these complaints are not always founded on fact or common sense. Guest speaker - MPP Paul Klopp, former CCAT graduate. eangratalations QLentratia.
