Spring arrives at
Huron Ridge Acres
For the professional and amateur landscaper alike, Huron
Ridge Acres offers a vivid, array of flora guaranteed to delight
any palate. The greenhouses display a wide range of house-
plants, bedding plants, patio pots and hanging baskets, while eve-
ry hue of green can be found radiating from the flowering trees,
shrubs and vines which make up the surrounding grounds.
Even after the rush of spring planting season is over, Carol,
Dave and Kevin Steckle are ready to meet your gardening needs.
Huron Ridge Acres has a fabulous selection of nursery stock, all
potted up and ready to be planted all summer long.
The Steckles also have a very large selection of perennials in
pots for summer planting, as Huron Ridge is quickly becoming a
year round garden centre.
"Some people prefer to buy perennials throughout the sum-
mer," said David Steckle. " That way they can see what they'll
.bloom tike before they buy them.;; •
/titIf ron Ridge Acres or'ers oversandrre of shopping area, with
much of it covered by greenhousb. When people enter the front
door, they think there's a lot of plants in the first greenhouse, but
considering what the Steckles have to offer, they really haven't
seen that much.
"It goes on and on," said Steckle. "It's really quite deceiving."
Dave and Carol started the business in 1973 with about 2,000
square feet of greenhouse to which they have steadily added.
Since that time, son Kevin has entered the business, and the
Steckles have added a flower shop in Zurich.
"I guess we've come a long way," agrees Steckle.
They built the greenhouses themselves, with the first ones
made of wood. Huron Ridge currently utilizes 12 greenhouses in
all, as well as a large outdoor perennial area with one of the larg-
est selections of perennials in the area.
During peek season, Steckle has about a dozen people working
for him, including the delivery men who have been swamped of
late.
It's been so busy that thoughts were entertained about covering
yet another greenhouse.
"So far it's been one of the fastest, busiest seasons we've ever
had," said Steckle.
The owner is always searching to find new varieties of perenni-
als and those not normally readily available. At present time,
Huron Ridge boasts what are probably Huron County's only
fruiting banana trees.
Huron Ridge Acres is currently operating on May hours, open
weekdays from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
and 1:30 to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Beginning June 15 the business
will remain open until 6 p.m. on weekdays and be closed on Sun-
days.
