Quinn confident Hawks

EXETER - Although the Exeter Junior D Hawks once again fell a little R
short of getting to the Ontario finals this year, team manager Al

Quinn was addressing the team at its annual awards banquet Saturday s
evening, and he said he was full of optimism for the Hawks' future.
"We should have gone to the Ontario final," said Quinn. "We had Lucan sw

Quinn predicted that if next year's team can put together a lineup with tw
the same calibre of player as this year's, then he said the Hawks would see

Katherine Ens, more
than a volunteer
There is always a handful of individuals who take on
the bulk of the sports load in every community.
It's something they've always done and for most,
something they will continue to do.
One of these is Katherine Ens.
How's this for a portfolio; president of the Exeter Figure
Skating Club, secretary -treasurer of the Tyndall Karate Club
in Exeter and secretary -treasurer of the Exeter Minor Baseball
Association.
In between running from meeting to meeting, Katherine is a
yellow belt in karate and teaches some classes and is the man-
ager of a tyke ball team.
"Someone has to do it," she said simply of her involvement.
"I enjoy being involved."
Katherine became the vice-president of the Skating Club af-
ter her children joined and when asked to take over the top
spot, didn't jump at the chance right away.
"I was asked right then when my kids signed up if I'd be
vice-president and I said no, I don't know anything about it,
but they kept telling me and teaching me."
She admits she has learned a lot as a result of being moved
into the top position very quickly. Katherine also said having
a good executive like the lo-
cal club has is very impor-
tant.
"If I—don't know what I'm
doing then they'll know what
I'm supposed to be doing."
The Exeter Minor Baseball
Association is not as struc-
tured as other organizations
as they have a few key peo-
ple who do the administrative duties.
"It suits the baseball organization, the figure skating you
could never get away with it. It's too big of an organization
you have 140 skaters and they're all in different sections."
Katherine has been in karate for the past four years and has
her yellow belt. She competes in toumaments and her sons
have been involved.
"With the karate club that gets into more fund raising be-
cause it's a smaller group."
She works for Canada Post and always makes sure to take
time for her family. Their day is Sunday.
She recently had to attend a skating meeting on Sunday.
"I object to that because Sunday's are reserved as my family
day."
Katherine has a very bigproject in the works which is
scheduled for Saturday, August 10. That's the day of a Sports
Flea Market at the South Huron Recreation Centre.
Anyone with sports or exercise equipment who want to buy
or sell, this is the place to do it. Doors for those who will be
selling open at 10 a.m.
Also, this Friday and Saturday the Exeter Figure Skating
Club will be selling hot dogs at Darlings.

A recent press release that landed on my desk says the Min-
istry of Tourism and Recreation has created a new positiofi; a
commissioner for amateur boxing.
The commissioner will help ensure the safety in the sport.
Minister of Tourism and Recreation Peter North says, "we
can not sit idle while the safety of our boxers is being com-
promised."
Can you believe these Stanley Cup playoffs?
For those who keep asking me if I saw last night's game, I
have to say sorry.
Now why would a sports reporter not be watching you ask?
Believe it or not, my new residence in Mt. Carmel does not
have cable. I guess I'll just have to be like the Toronto Maple
Leafs and get a real early jump on my golf game.
On the playoffs, how many out there who are in the Exeter
Minor Hockey Association pool picked the North Stars or the
Penguins to win the Stanley Cup?
