They're off (above) - A stream of flowers flows over the MacNaugh-
ton Park weir as the team of race starters launched the first ever
May Day Dash for Community Living South Huron. On the weir are
Eloise Klungel, Harry Stuart, Harry Klungel, Nargis Tamhohamed,
Ron Walker, Ila Mathers, Ron VanBree, Roberta Walker, Howard
Jones, and Betty Sanders. Firing the starting pistol was Huron MPP
Paul Klopp.
First ever (top right) - With high hopes for a new form of fundrais-
ing, representatives from Community Living South Huron hold the
banner on the first May Day Dash in Exeter - a race of sponsored
flowers down the river in MacNaugton Park. From left are vice-
chairman Henry VanEssen, chairman Ila Mathers, Betty Sanders, ex-
ecutive director John Grey, MPP Paul Klopp, and Alhambra Lodge
grand commander Ron VanBree.
Finish line (right) - Taking just 15 minutes to float from the Mac-
Naughton
ao-Naughton Park weir the winning flower in the May Day Dash was
sponsored by Karen Etherington of Hensall who won maid service
for a year. Second place went to Herman Steffens of Lucan who
won a dinner at Oakwood Inn, and Pete Smeekins of Grand Bend
won an Anstett's gift certificate. Although there were about 670
flowers in the race, volunteers from the Alhambra Lodge retrieved
them all from the river.
Villagers complain
about derelict barn
ZURICH - Fourteen village
residents have complained to
Zurich council about a barn they
believe to be a safety and health
hazard.
Shingles have been blowing
off the barn and landing on
neighbouring properties.
However, clerk -treasurer Mau-
reen Simmons told council
Thursday evening that the health
unit has inspected the barn in the
northwest corner of the village
and declared it to be clean, but
say it may be structurally un-
sound.
Councillor Keith Semple said
he was concerned children
might be playing in it while it is
under risk of collapsing.
Council decided to ask the
building inspector to examine
the derelict barn to see if it reJ
quires demolition.
Zurich doesn't want to
disappear off the map
ZURICH - According to Zurich
reeve Bob Fisher, he has yet to
meet someone who supports the
downgrading of Highway 84 to a
county road.
"I don't think that anyone I've
talked to thinks it should be a
county road, but we should keep in
the back of our minds that [the
Ministry of Transportation] can say
'it's now a county road' and not
have to do anything," said Fisher at
Thursday evenings council meet-
ing.
County council last month was
asked by the MTO if they would
consider a study on the future
downgrading of provincial high-
ways
igh-
ways 83 and 84 to become I luron
County roads.
Councillor Doug Thiel told coun-
cil he understood the Zurich Cham-
ber of Commerce opposes any
change in the status of highway 84.
Thiel asked if the village Should
suppppoo that sentiment.
Tithed said could see many disad-
vantages for Zurich to lose its stat-
us as being located on a provincial
highway.
"The new provincial road maps
come out and you're [Zurich] not
there. You just disappear," warned
Thiel.
Fisher agreed with Thiel and said
there would be no harm in voicing
an opposition to such downgrading,
adding letters should go to the
county, member of provincial par-
liament, and the MTO.
Thiel said he would see to
drafting a letter to present to coun-
cil next month.
"Rather than just dash off some
letter, we should give it some
thought," said Thiel.
Fisher pointed out county council
has refused to do a study for the
MTO unless a request comes from
the minister himself.
London man fined for
not report/ng accident
•
Amok
EXETER - A London man was fined S153.75
in Justice of the Peace Court in Exeter last Tues-
day for failing to remain at the scene of an acci-
dent.
Darcy Day of Quebec Street, London, pleaded
not guilty to failing to wait for police after his
car rolled over while going down an embank-
ment in Stephen Township 4n Highway 81 at 1
a.m. January 27. Day did pkad guilty to an
amended charge of failing to report the accident
to police.
Day did notify police 12 hours after the incident, and told the court
he had no reason for not reporting it earlier.
Justice of the Peace Doug Wedlake gave Day 15 days to pay the
fine.
Radar detector
Scott King of Ryan Avenue, London was found guilty in court for
driving with a radar warning device in his vehicle, and for driving
with open liquor.
King was stopped on the Main Street of Exeter on November 13
last year by a cruiser equipped with a device for detecting radar de-
tectors.
King showed police a New Brunswick driver's license in someone
else's name, but investigation showed this license had been found by
'the driver who eventually produced his valid license.
Police told the court there was a case of beer in the car with one
open and one missing bottle.
A radar detector was found in a jacket pocket and the court heard
that the accused had one prior conviction of having a radar warning
device.
JP Wedlake set the fines at a total of S287.50 with 30 days to pay.
The radar detector was forfeited.
Spring cleanup woes for-Lucan
LUCAN - The spring garbage
pickup kept the Lucan works de-
partment busy last week, but the
village council felt some of the re-
fuse being collected might not all
be coming from local residents.
"They seem to be dragging it out.
I think some of it's coming from
out of town," said works depart-
ment superintendent Doug John-
ston.
He said this year's pickup went a
little over the budget as it Wok sev-
eral trips to the landfill.:.:::;::;.. , .....
"As long as you keep picking it,
up
t-
up they'll keep putting it out," he
said.
But council agreed that was the
purpose, to help cleanup the vil-
lage. However, Johnston noted
there were three or four stoves
picked up from one residence.
That's when it was believed some
of the refuse was being brought in
from outside the village.
"I think maybe tag them and send
them a warring," said councilor
Tom McLaughlin who felt the pick-
up system was being abused.
J ter,,., Q ted that perhaps
in the future, the landfill be open
for a week and everyone take their
own refuse to the site.
"The people who abuse it and
have garbage lying around would
be the last ones to have it trucked
away," said McLaughlin.
It cost about $2,000 to do the
pickup, up about $300 from a year
ago.
"I can't believe it cost more than
last year," said reeve Larry Hotson.
He said if the village was to hand
out fines to those who abused the
system it might stop a lot from tak-
ing advantage of it.
Sidewalks
for Zurich
ZURICH - After calling tenders
for the reconstruction of sidewalks
for various streets in the village.
Zurich council decided 10 approve
a littleextra work to take more ad-
vantage of a provincial grant.
Council had budgeted $40,000
for sidewalk improvement through
its PRIDE project, but when a ten-
der from Nicholson Concrete of St.
Marys came in at $34,497, GST in-
cluded, council decided it could af-
ford a little more expense and see
sidewalks on Main Street on the
east side of the village upgraded.
Council on Thursday evening ap-
peared pleased with the tender, and
pointed out that the S32.10 per line-
ar metre was only slightly more ex-
pensive than last year's sidewallc
tender.
The sidewalk project will also in-
clude work in front of the newly -
expanded village arena, but council
have included a clause in the con-
tract that requires work to be com-
pleted before the Zurich summer
fair.
