Saimon derby

GRAND BEND - The Third An-
nual Salmon Derby officially
opened on Saturday, but the high
winds on Sunday afternoon cut
down on those trying to hook the
best salmon. They'll be braving
a w days of cool, rainy weather
this week, so we hope they stay
warm and the fish k- ' biting.
The money raised • y the derby
goes to restock the Blue Water An-
gler Fish Hatcheries, as well as to
the Clamber of Commerce and the
Salmon, Duby. num/ill ensure a
salmon derby for years to come.
John and Maureen Sass, daughter
of the late Val Burke, are fu►ishing
up a three week visit to Grand
Bend area, staying at their home in
Oakwood. They presently reside in
Arizona; but come up in spring and
fall to say hello to family and old
friends.

ers Construction have been rushing
to meet the deadline, and the results
were certainly worth waiting for.
The new accommodations building
offers several luxurious suites, with
a dressing room as well as a huge
whirl -pool tub in the main bath.
The TV and a tiny refrigerator are
discreetly concealed in a large
amoire, m most of the rooms. An
elegant gazebo at the south end of
the building is furnished in dark
green wicker and a garden of potted
flowers and shrubs.
The conference centre seats 250,
and is tastefully appointed in a deep
red/dark green plaid carpet to con-
trast the wooden walls. Scatcherd is
well on his way to creating all the
atmosphere of a world-class resort,
right here in Grand Bend:

Wyoming Branch 1388 provided
the winning entertainment down-
stairs on Saturday afternoon at the
Jam Session, as Bernie Quenne-
ville wowed the folks with his tal-
ent. Next Saturday, Dennis Siren
will be leading the afternoon Jam
session, starting one hour earlier at
2 p.m. to entertain the visiting
Mitchell Legion.

Comrade PRO Shirley Pole at-
tended the Zone Convention in
Blyth. --esenting the Exeter Le-
gion Ladies Auxiliary on Sunday
May 5. She participated in the Col-
our Party and carried one of the
flags to the Cenotaph. The ladies
marched behind the Brussels Le-
gido Pipe Band, and the Colour
Party had to hang onto their flags,
which threatened to blow away in
the high winds that afternoon.
A steak barbecue will be on May
18 with Bob Findley as entertainer.

An Open Two -Ball Foursome
will be held on June 1 with $20 for
green fees and a steak barbecue.

March of Dimes

GRAND BEND - The Grand
Bend Lioness sponsored the local
March of Dimes mailout campaign.
They've collected $700 in dona-
tions, and raised an additional $200
by selling tickets on a March of
Dimes collectors plate, won by
Marge Roberts. The tots/ of $900
was presented to March of Dimes.
The Lioness are currently in-
volved in getting ready for a large
Yard Sale, to be held at the Oak-
wood Tennis Courts on May 18.

If you've got anything to contribute
to the sale and/or want to get rid of
something, call any Lioness mem-
ber.
The next Lioness meeting will be
on May 23 at Oakwood inn, with
dinner at 7 p.m. and the business

ZURIC- The official opening
of the new wing at the Blue Water
Rest Home took piece Sunday af-
ternoon with an impressive out-
door ceremony. Mater of ceremo-
nies was Board Chairman Robert
Westlake, who introduced several
dignitaries and guest speaker Gail
Ure who is manager of Communi-
ty Health and Support Services.
Music was provided by students
of Huron Centennial School, and
following the ribbon cutting, tours
and refreshments were provided.
This year also marks the Home's
25th Anniversary.
Lions Canvass
Members of the Lions Club can-
vassed for the Cancer Society
Monday prior to their regular
meeting at the Dominion Tavern.
Group One will work the bingo
Thursday, May 9 and will be mak-
ing use of blue boxes to help clean
up afterwards.

The grade seven and eight stu-
dents of St Boniface Parish will be
receiving the Sacrament of Confir-
mation on Thursday, May 9 with
Bishop Sherlock celebrating the
mass at 7:30 p.m.
London Diocesan Convention
St. Boniface CWL President
Mary -Lou Denomme, along with
Carolyn Mathonia, accompanied
CWL members from St. Peter's
Parish, Bernadette Denomme and
Mary Ducharme, to the annual Lon-
don Diocesan Convention that was
held in Windsor at the Holiday Inn
on the weekend. The event includ-
ed a banquet held at the Caboto
Club.
Spring Concert
The spring concertperformed by
the children from kindergarten to
grade three at St. Boniface School
was held Thursday. The singing,
acting and costumes were wonder-
ful.
Boy Scouts
Nine scouts from Zurich along
with leaders Hub. Thiel and Bob
Smith were among the hundreds
who took part in the Great Ride for
Cancer recently at the Pinery Park
in Grand Bend.
Many of the boys camped out in
Thiel's bush the night before and
made the trek by bike to the site of
the ride where they camped to be
ready for the Sunday ride. Need-
less to say that by the time the actu-
al ride was complete they were too
tired to cycle home and instead
went by car. Personals
I would hie to make a correction
in regards to the report on the re-
cent wedding of Dan Watson and
Amy Gordon wbo were married in
London, April 27. Also attending
the wedding were the groom's par-
ents, George and Donna Watson
along with a large number of
friends and relatives from the Zu-
rich area.
It's nice to see that To .ind Che-
ryl Durand are able to be home
again after their recent car accident.
Birthday wishes are extended to
Heather Klopp and Stacey Over-
holt.
An 80th birthday party was held
in honour of Clarence Farwell of
the Maple Woods Apaivnents in
Zurich. Relatives came from as far
as Vancouver to celebrate at the
home of Bill and Helene Regier in
Mount Carmel.
Congratulations to Frank and
Judy Van Aaken on the arrival of
their son and to Barry and Kelly
Hodgins on the birth of their daugh-
ter, Latoya Louwellen.
Earl and Anne Flaxbard attended
the 25th Anniversary of their
daughter Shirley and husband Ross

ery to Ruby Neeb, a patient at Uni-

Monday was an exciting day for
me as I spent the day in Toronto
with daughter Heather and her hus-
band Paul Klopp for the reading of
the first NDP budget at Queen's
Park. While Paul was busy we vis-
ited Casa Loma until the reading.
Afterwards a gathering was held
with refreshments.
