Anglers flock to
annual salmon derby
GRAND BEND - What about the one that didn't get away?
Hundreds of local anglers are keeping their lines baited and their fin-
gers crossed that the big one doesn't get away at the Third Annual
Grand Bend Salmon Derby.
On Saturday the boats went out and midway through the afternoon,
Bob Shain of Petrolia returned with a 21.42 -pound salmon. His catch
was the best as of 7 p.m. Monday night and Jim Conners was second at
17.44.
"1 -le caught it on a blue and silver body bait, that's all he told us,"
said Don Labelle of the derby committee.
LaBelle said the fishermen aren't that secretive when it comes to tell-
ing what's the best lure to hopefully snag the big one.
"Most of them tell you what they caught it on. Most nue as the same
body}blot
and' die 3artne'spoon:' As soon as they tell you *luilteplour it,
ris,'e'Vdrybde'used'dig colour,"' Said LaBelle.
The derby stretches over nine days as the final fish can be wee ed at
2 p.m. on Sunday. Prize money has increased this year as $5,0M goes
to the biggest fish.
There area total of 15 top prizes with a mystery draw every day. A
9.9 horsepower motor will also be drawn from all those who bought
the $10 entry fee ticket.
LaBelle said the number of fishermen in the derby increase each year
and he expects 1,000 this year. He said once they get up to 3,000 an-
glers than the prize money could increase to 'as much as $10,000 for
the top catch.
Although the weigh station which is located in a mobile headquarters
near. the Harbour building isn't open until noon each day, the boats are
in the water very early.
"Most of them are out by 6 a.m. and a lot of them are in by noon and
they go back out at night," said LaBelle.
Most of them are either Grand Bend or Port Franks residents and fish
between St. Joesph's and Kettle Point.
"We have a limit. If you're any further than 10 miles, it's too far."
All fish caught are kept by the anglers except the winner which is to
be stuffed and mounted for posterity.
The awards night will be May 25 at the Grand Bend Legion.
Jack Eagleson and Bob Jennison help ttel) the catches.
