Over 300
ladies attend
Spring Event
By Joan Beierling
VARNA - Over 300 ladies
walked through the doors of the
Stanley Township Complex last
week to "Celebrate Life" at the Hu-
ron Perth Presbyterial Spring
Event. Varna, Goshen and Bayfield
U.C.W.'s hosted the event.
The theme was on "Celebrating
Us", the Celebration Panel included
speakers, Marilyn Elgie, The Little
Years; Bev and Jenny Robinson,
The Teen Years; Jeannie Udall, the
Middle Years; and Alma Langford
the Upper Years. These speakers
spoke on their experience and anec-
dotes happening in those years.
Julie Kalbfleisch and exchange
student Kristy Anna Cosack from
Lippstaddt, Germany spoke at the
Varna U.C.W. meeting last week.
Sixteen -year-old Cosack is attend-
ing Goderich High School, which is
really quite different than Germa-
ny. They don't choose their own
subjects and they have 11-15 sub-
jects per semester. School is strictly
school, and all other activities and
clubs are within the community.
School hours are from 8 a.m.-1
p.m. Part time jobs for students are
not important or even expected of
you, parents provide. Driver's li-
cense age is 18 years and is quite
expensive to pay for.
While in Germany, Kalbfleisch
was impressed with the number of
historical cathedrals, castles and
churches with all their attractive ar-
chitecture and detailed marble.
Cosack lives on a farm near Lipp-
staddt where the population is
67,000 which means Varna and
even Goderich look pretty small.
She has been to Niagara Falls and
would love to go back. She likes
nature and the beaches, as beaches
are few in Germany. She is staying
at Kalbfleisch's in Varna and will
return home in July.
Carol Simons opened the busi-
ness part of the meeting, Keep sav-
ing those Campbell Soup Labels
for the deaf in Peurto Rico. It is
really amazing the amount of arti-
cles they buy with these.
A generous donation was given
to the Vacation Bible School.
June 10 is Camp Menesetung
Day starting at 9:30 a.m., the theme
being on "A Woman and Her
World".
The church Pork Barbecue is
June 19 so get your tickets and
mark your calendar.

the Varna Church by Rev. George
Phillips were: Raymond Beierling,
Brian and Paul Hill, David Rath -
well, Krista McAsh, Shelli, Cheryl
and Susanne Stephenson, Mark and
MaryEllen Webster. Charles Reid,

tion. Charles then presented each

en Church were Joanne Hayter, Ja-
son Hayter and Leslie Linfield.
Flowers placed in the Varna
Church were in memory of Andy
Evans. Our deepest sympathy goes
out to the Evan's family.
Wayne and Joan Beierling hosted
a family gathering to celebrate Ray-
mond's confirmation.

dren made their First Holy Com-
munion at Immaculate Heart of
Mary Church this past weekend.
Congratulations to Holly Lovie,

drew Smith, Elyshia Denomme,

ther, who were confirmed Thursday
at St. Boniface Church in Zurich.
The new executive of the Catho-
lic Women's League were installed
during the 11 a.m. Mass on Sun-
day. Father Beck was celebrant as-
sisted by Deacon Sam Dixon. The
Mass honored Our Lady of Good
Council, Patroness of the CWL,
and CWL members served as read -1
er, cantor, eucharistic ministers and
ushers. During communion, the
choir sang "Ave Maria" and'Rober-
ta Walker performed a solo "On
This Day, 0 Beautiful Mother".
The homily was given by Deacon
Dixon, taken from the scripture
readings "You must love your
neighbour as yourself'. As an ex-
ample of loving neighbours he
spoke of the WWII example of the !
Danish people who protected and
hid their Jewish neighbours from
the Nazis. Only 20 Jews out of
5200 were ever captured, and some
Danes lost their lives in protecting
them and helping them to escape.
"Greater love hath no man, than to
lay down his life for his friend".
Memberships for CWL were col-
lected after all the weekend Mass-
es. CWL president Cathy Vrohyk
and Grads Vlemmix attended the
Diocesan Convention in Windsor
on April 30 to May 1. The next
CWL meeting will be on Tuesday,
May 14 at 8 p.m. in the Alhambra
Hall. •
