Trojans have Irish on the ropes
Lucan faces elimination
By Fred Groves
LUCAN - It's going to take a lit-
tle luck of the Irish for Lucan to
come back and beat the Thames -
ford Trojans.
Another defenceman wouldn't
hurt Lucan either as they face
coming out on the short end of the
Ontario Hockey Association Jun-
ior 'D' championship against the
defending champion Thamesford
Trojans.
Tonight in Thamesford, the Tro-
jans who won big 9-5 in Lucan
Monday, could wrap things up and
defeat the Irish for the second
straight year.
Monday, the clear difference
was Lucan's lack of defencemen
as they only had four bluelincrs.
Late last weck, veteran Todd
Hayter was hospitalized and had
his spleen removed, leaving the
Irish very short-staffed.
Cornered - Lucan forward Andy Ross,
jans in Thursday's game in Lucan.
Brad Bowers, who along with
Jamie Pearce, Ed VanKerkoerle
and Kevin Leitch had a busy
night, said the whole team is hurt-
ing.
"We ran out of steam. Everyone
is banged up, that's what's killing
us," said Bowers.
Besides Todd Hayter, Greg Muir
has been sidelined for quite a
while with a broken ankle and in
Friday's game, Jeremy Jemec suf-
fered a broken wrist.
Both Tim Hayter and Paul
O'Shea are also on the mend and
there are several bumps and bruis-
es throughout the team.
"We just have to come together
as a team and it would help if we
were healthy," said Bowers.
Repeating as champs isn't as
easy as it may seem for the Tro-
jans.
"It's quite difficult to repeat,"
said Thamesford coach Bob Hen
is 10 seconds later was sent off. for
demon who has about half h
team back from 1990.
"They don't want to get up for i
last year was a liule different. B
I think they're close enough no
they want to get it over with o
Wednesday."
Quick goals: It certainly wasn'
a goaltenders duel in the first fo
minutes of Monday's game as Da
Brand made it 1-0 just 34 second
into the game. Jon McEachem
hung on to the puck, went aroun
the net and got it to Brand who
backanded it past Thamesford's
Neil Harding.
"It was very sloppy, it was terri-
ble hockey until the third period,"
said Henderson.
It was tied when John Grasso let
go with a quick shot that caught
Bob Szabo off guard.
McEachern gave the Irish the
lead once again when he knock ;d
down a.player in the corner, carie
up with the puck and after faili, g
on an attempted pass got the shot
away.
Thamesford came back and tied it
for the second time when Dave
Cooper snapped a 15 -footer into
the top comer.
The visitors headed into the first
break up by a goal when VanKer-
koerle couldn't tie up Josh Lewis in
front of the net and Lewis deflected
a Mark Hannam shot through Sza-
bo's Legs.
"Were quite offensive, I think
our record is 358 goals in 40
games," said Henderson whose
team lost only three regular season
games.
The first period had a couple of
good checks as Pearce dropped
Lewis at the Trojans' blueline and
McEachern and Jean Marc Loiselle
collided.
Referee Ivan Bryce missed Tha-
mesford's David Dianni playing
with a broken stick for 15 seconds.
Lucan was undisciplined as they
had trouble clearing the puck out of
their .own, • end= an4 ;ason 'Wi(soja,

roughing.
t, The Irish had lots of powerplays,
ut including a two-man advantage at
w the start of the period but couldn't
n cash in.
Just like the fust period, the Irish
t scored a quick goal in the third pe-
ur riod as McEachern got his hat tuck
n just 25 seconds into the last frame.
s But Hannam stopped any Irish
Comeback and McKnight and Mark
d Roypers added insurance markers.
On McKnight's goal, his second
of the night vzabo raced out to the
blueline a knocked the puck
away but McKnight managed to get
the puck and skate towards the
open net.
Lucanended the period just as
they started, on the powerplay. This
time it was with Justin Henry in the
box for slashing DePrest. Henry got
a five-minute penalty but the Irish
couldn't score.
The lights went out in the second
period and after a ten-minute the Irish woke up but so did elthe
Trojans.
McEachem put a big move on the
defenceman and fired one through
Harding's legs to de it up and then'a
seldom seen four -on -four situation
resulted in Greg DePrest finding
his scoring touch again as he also
put it through Harding's legs.
Tim Hayter, returning to the line-
up following a separated shoulder,
carried the puck to the net and set
up the goal.
But that was all the Irish could do
in the second as Thamesford scored
twice, 31 seconds apart.
Bob Brown got his stick u and
left; comers a Thamesford Tro- deflected a high pass by Quinn
McKnight to make it 5-4.

ing scorer.
Although Lucan goalie Dan Jenk-
en stopped 43 shots, including 17
in the third period, it just wasn't
enough as the host Trojans won 5-4
in overtime on Friday night.
At the 6:25 mark of the overtime
4period, McKnight got his second
goal of the night and his fourth
point to give his team a two games -
to -one lead in the series.
" This was a real see -saw game as
Darren Neil opened the scoring for
the Lucan at 3:58 on a powerplay
but McKnight tied it up 14 seconds
later.
Lewis made it 2-1 for Thames -
ford but Brian Schuyler answered
26 ticks later. In the second, Loi-
selle gave the Trojans a quick lead
and it took Schuyler until the 12:50
• mark to even it up.
In the third, Lewis got his second
and at 6:14 Wilson. scored which
eventually sent the game into over-
time. It was Wilsons third point of
the night as be set. up ,two earlier,
goals.
League's best - Rick Pikul, lett; and Paul Woo/ford along with Bill
Dark were the Southern League's top goalies.
Trailing 2-0 early in the game,
the Irish regrouped, tied it up and
went on to wm game two, 6-3
Thursday night in Lucan.
Thamesford's Micky Dupuis
scored just 45 seconds into the
game and then added a shorthanded .
goal at 8:16.
Schuyler stole the puck and got
his own shorthanded goal. A nice
passing play at 13:55 saw Schuyler
feed Jason Wilson to tie it up.
Andy Ross got a powerplay goal
early in the second for the only
goal of that period.
But it was all Lucan in the third
as Wilson got his second, McEach-
