"At the moment it's pretty hectic," says the Co-op's Lauren Love, as she scurries to prepare for the opening. Store man- ager Bill Atthill is busy reconstructing a greenhouse for the event, while Love herself is charged with its organization. This will be the fourth year for the Co-op's greenhouse, and when completed it will house a wide range of bedding plants, small shrubs, and roses. Because it is a community store, the Co-op tries to cover everything to meet your lawn and garden needs. The wide gardening variety will even include straw- berries and rhubarb. The co-op is a one stop shop where customers should be able to find everything they need. "If they can't," says Love, "we'll do our best to find it." Avid gardeners have already begun their usual spring ritu- als, and Love agrees that this is the time to be trimming and pruning and advises gardeners should be well prepared. "Work the ground up well," says Love. "And try using peat moss; it really pays off." ,), Laying plastic around plants is a good idea to help beat the weeds, although it makes it hard to mix in perennials. It alle- viates the need tel spray and looks great after stones am placed overtop, but Love advises that gardeners should be sure to leave enough space around the shrubs so that water will be able to get down to the plants' roots. The Co-op has many type'. of stone coverings in both white and red as well as a birch covering. Currently, the most pop- ular among new homeowners seems to be the bark chip, be- cause it eventually breaks down into the soil. The Gardening Centre also carries mulch which again is quite popular. For those looking to fertilize, the Co-op offers their 16-4-8, a slow release fertilizer which prevents the nitrogen from be- ing lost all at once, making it better for your lawn. In addition to lawn care products, the Co-op offers a full line of power equipment inc:uding lawnmowers and garden tractors as well as a complete line of garden tools. The Saturday activities will begin with an all -you -can -eat Mother's Day breakfast served by the Hensall and District Kinettes. Pancakes and sausage will be served from 8:30 a.m. until noon for only $3.50, and children under six can eat free. A garden centre will also be set up this year at the Ailsa Craig location, and with the Zurich store carrying lumber and materials for decks and flower beds, Love assures that the Co-op can meet the needs of both town and country.
