South Huron students vow to clean up this town
Times -Advocate, May 1, 1991 Page 13
EXETER - South
Huron District High
School teacher
George McEwan
lead three of his sci-
ence classes to
McNaughton Park,
the South Huron
Recreation Centre
and the downtown
core on Wednesday
and Thursday, to
help clean up gar-
bage as part of Earth
Week Activities.
McEwan reported
that about 95 percent
of the trash was ac-
tual litter as opposed
to heavy industrial
material and metal,
yet the groups still
managed to clean up
over 300 kg of gar-
bage. Most of the
trash was collected
from behind stores
along Main St., es-
pecially near fences
of private residenc-
es.
"Garbage cans are
close by," comment-
ed Dave Dalrymple.
"Why aren't they
used."
Others wondered
how much would be
there for them to
I clean up next year.
Cleaning up - Paul Goldsmith pulls sheets of cardboard from the banks of the Ausable River.
McEwan also re-
ported that plenty of
building material
was found in the
west end of
McNaughton Park
and in the Ausable
River, including
many full sheets of
both plastic and sty-
rofoam insulation.
The group followed
up the activity by
planting 500 trees
just east of the park,
with the help of Gib
Dow of Ironwood
Golf Course and Pat-
ti Haist of the Ausa-
ble Bayfield Conser-
vation Authority.
