Donor clinic
next week
LONDON - Thursday, April 25
two members o 'the Ausable River
Nomads Ruth Haist and Marie
Brunzlow attended the Red Cross
Volunteer Day in London.
This was held in the London Life
Auditorium and included represen-
tatives from all over Southwestern
Ontario. The volunteers came from
Windsor, Sarnia, Chatham, Owen
Sound and of course smaller cen-
tres.
The Red Cross theme is 'Working
to make a difference.' There are
five squares in a Red Cross. Each
square represents a part of the Red
Cross Society which are (1) Role of
the Volunteers and staff; (2) Servic-
es and Programs, Community and
International; (3) Image of Red
Cross; (4) Personal Rewards and
(5) Future directions bf the organi-
zation.
The Red Cross has many services
besides collecting blood, Just a few
are Emergency Services, Transpor-
tation, Homemakers, Veterans Arts
and Crafts, First Aid, Sick Emer-
gency Loan Services and of course
the Blood Donor Clinics which col-
lected 63,900 units of blood in
1990.
Jane Hauser, co-ordinator of the
Unrelated Bone Marrow Donor reg-
istry, spoke to the group. Bone
Marrow is the body's factory for
producing blood cells and this can
be transplanted from a normal
healthy individual to a patient with
a disease such as aplastic anemia or
leukemia. This new bone marrow
will eventually take over the activi-
ty of making new blood cells for
the patient.
Deborah Gibson, an International
Committee Red Cross delegate,
spoke to the group of her 18
months spent in Sudan, Africa, as a
relief supervisor.
Their job was to provide assis-
tance and protection, medical and
food, tracing and reuniting families
if possible. She told us their help
makes a difference to a few, but
even only a few helped still means
a lot.
There will be a blood donor clin-
ic in Exeter Tuesday, May 7 in
which everyone can do their part.
Anyone can give from 17 years to
71 years of age.
Identification is required for new
donors, donors new to the area, and
donors who have not donated in the
past two years.
