Optimist youth
dance Friday

ZURICH - The Zurich Optimist
Club is planning to hold another
youth dance Friday, April 26 in
the gym of the Zurich Public
School. It will run from 7-10 p.m.
for those age 11-15. Admission is
$2 and pop and chips are availa-
ble. The event will be chape-
roned.
The Optimist Club will also hold
a garage sale Saturday, May 18
and Sunday, May 19 at the home
of Linda Markham, RR#2 Zurich.

Bowling Banquet
The Zurich Bowling Banquet for
ladies', men's and mixed leagues
will be held Saturday, April 27 at
the Hensall Community Centre.
Fish Fry
The annual fish fry will be held
on Sunday at the Zurich arena be-
ginning at 4:30 p.m. Tickets are
$7 person and $3.50 for children
under 12. The event is sponsored
by the Lions Club.
Ladies Auxiliary
The next meeting of the Ladies
Auxiliary for the Blue Water Rest
Home will be Tuesday,, ,May 7.
Plans will be finalized for their
Mother's Day Tea and Bazaar
which will be held May 11, from
2-3:30 p.m.
PTA Meeting
The St. Boniface School PTA
meeting was held Wednesday. Fa-
ther Morris opened with prayer
and President Jim Denomme •
chaired the meeting. A .motion
was made to donate $500 towards
re -grading the baseball diamond
and buying some softballs.
The minutes of last meeting
were read by Charlene Finkbeiner
and Elaine Beauchamp. Carmel
Sweeney reported that the next hot-
dog day will be April 24.
Dave Sharpe reported that the
school is unable to get 'a grant to
buy new front curtains for the gym,
and it was decided that the PTA
will work towards this project for
next year.
The next meeting will be Tues-
day, May 28 at 8 p.m. and will be a
general meeting with all invited to
attend. Following the meeting will
be a musical program and potluck
supper.
Senior Diners
The Zurich Senior Diners met
Wednesday, 35 strong. Tammy
Antaya welcomed everyone and
speeches were given by Kelly Thiel
and Julie Geiger. Harry Shepherd
of Parkhill demonstrated musical
dances and following that the din-
ers enjoyed euchre and bridge.
Minor Athletic Banquet
Thursday evening a potluck sup-
per was held at the Zurich Commu-
nity Centre by the Minor Athletic
Association. President John Geiger
acted as master of ceremonies pre-
senting young hockey players with
various trophies and awards.
Figure Skating
The Zurich and Area Figure Skat-
ing Club held their awards baiquet
on Sunday with President Sheila
Miller chairing the event. Awards
were handed out to the deserving
inaieiduals and elections were held
for next year.
Piano Recital
The Music for Young Children
piano recital attracted a full house
on the weekend, as the pupils of
Laurie Erb entertained their fami-
lies and friends at the Zurich Public
School. The program featured
singing and dancing and was 'fol-
lowed by a social hour with refresh-
ments.
Brownies
Despite the weather, the Brown-
ies were out selling cookies on the
weekend and were quite successful.
If anyone would still like some
they are available tor $2.50 from
Brown Owl Deb Overholt, at 236-
4700.
Personals
A surprise 30 birthday party was
held for Patti Fox on Friday when
several of her friends turned up to
escort her and Walter for dinner.
Birthday wishes are extended to
Todd Laporte, Anne, Doug and
Dennis Willert, as well as Mary
Richardson.
A dinner was held at the home of
Gary and Bette Flaxbard in honour
of Geoffrey's birthday.
Congratulations to twin brothers
and their wives who celebrated
their 40 anniversary. Keith and
Helen Gingerich celebrated as did
Ken and Jean Gingerich. An open
house was held at the. Mennonite
Church with over 200 in atten-
dance.
Congratulations to Butch and
Marion Sweeney celebrating their
29 anniversary.
Best wishes are extended to Vera
Thiel who is a patient in St. Jo-
seph's in London.
Congratulations to Nick and
Chris Littlechild on the arrival of
Wesley.

thy to the relatives of the late Pat
Tiede who passed away on Satur-
day. Pat was brother-in-law to Mo-
zart Gelinas Sr.
Bob and Carol Johnston recently
enjoyed a vacation in Cancun,
Mexico.

nie Overholt were Joey and Sandra
Overholt and Joe and Nancy Beck-
er.
Exeter United Church
EXETER - Prior to the afternoon
UCW April meeting, plans were fi-
nalized for smorgasbord which is
being held on Thursday, May 2
from 11:30 - 1:30. A hymn contest
was held while we enjoyed punch.
.The theme of the program was
Love, convened by Leona Hem.
Dorothy Bullock entertained with
solos accompanied by Avis Cud -
more. A humorous skit on teaching
about church work convened by
Laurette Seigner was enjoyed.
Those taking part were Luella Tay-
lor, Hilda Taylor, Laura Dickey,
Vera Mills, Velma Huff.
Laura Dickey, president, then
took charge of the business. She
welcomed everyone and read a
poem. Minutes were read, treasur-
ers report and collection taken. Le-
ona Brock reported $1,086 from
quilting. $3,200 was collected for
drugs for Brazil and the Drug Co.

selling 26 cases of cookies door to door. Two of those girls were Ar-

VARNA - Several members of
the Stan -Lee Club attended the
Zone 8 Spring Rally U.S.C.O. hold
in Dungannon on Tuesday April
16. The speaker was Lavonne Bal-
lagh from Wingham:
Tickets were sold on bags of
caries and there were many
prizes as well. Grace McClinchey
was the only one of their group to
be a winner.
The U.C.W. Spring Event will
be held Monday April 29 at the
Stanley Township Complex with
Varna -Goshen and Bayfield in
charge. Registration starts at 6:30
p.m. and the theme is The Stages
of Our Life.
This week is volunteer week and
many ladies from the Varna area
will be having a volunteer luncheon
for all their volunteered assistance
at Huron Centennial School on
Wednesday.
Heather Laurie's Remembrance
Day Essay has now' won at the Pro-
vincial level and Heather will be
presented with a certificate and a
cash prize of $150. Her Essay also
goes on the National level! Con-
gratulations again to Heather.
Many Sunday School children,
teachers and parents showed up for a
good afternoon of bowling in Zu-
rich on Sunday.
Several youngsters from the Var-
na area played minor, hockey in

Exeter 4-H

EXETER - On April 11 the 4-H
Fitness Fantasizers had a discussion
on their achievement day. They de-
cided on going for the walk-a-tho n,
on April 28.
On April 18 they went to the Ex-
eter Public School, for some bas-
ketball, volleyball and skipping
from 4-5 p.m. After that they went
to cool off at Kick's as Debbie Oak
did some aerobics with them for 30
minutes, and then they had a half
hour of free time to do what they
wanted to do.
To end their last meeting they
went to White Squirrel' to eat and
talk.
