Grand Bend Winter
Carnival wins awards
GRAND BEND - While people here have known that Grand Bend's
Winter Carnival is a winner, the annual winter event has managed to walk
off with five out of 13 awards presented by Festivals Ontario.
Festivals Ontario held their annual conference in Orillia last weekend
and handed out awards to the most deserving events which help promote
Ontario tourism.
The Grand Bend Winter Carnival was judged to have had the best festi-
val jingle, which was produced by EMAC Sound Studios in London; the
best television commercial, which was produced by Jocelyn Caron of TV
London; the best souvenir pin for sale; the best giveaway pin, and the best
black and white advertisement under 600 lines, which was produced by
the Times Advocate.
Dave Sheppard, chairman of the Grand Bend Winter Carnival was on
hand to accept the awards.
Other Ontario festivals which won awards for their promotion and pres-
entation included the Leacock Heritage Festival in Orillia, Riverfest in
Brampton, Mariposa in Toronto, the Sudbury Snowflake Festival, and Oc-
toberfest in Kitchener Waterloo.
Judging was done by a team from an independent Toronto marketing
firm. Festivals Ontario is a province -wide association of festivals, suppli-
ers, and sponsors aimed at assisting in the development of the Ontario fes-
tival industry. •
Zurich budget held to five
percent increase,
or can you pay more?
ZURICH - Village ratepayers can
ex a municipal tax increase on
the or five percent this year,
but Zuric satincil are wondering if
householders might be interested in
upping the ante a little to help pay
off the arena debt.
Council are planning to schedule
a village ratepayers meeting on
May 29 after a public drainage
meeting to see if there is general
support for increasing taxes a little
to help pay off the village portion
of the arena renovation project.
Otherwise, council appears confi-
dent that the municipal mill rate
can be held to a five percent in-
crease.
"If the ratepayers would like to
put a little more into helping pay
down the deficit on the build-
ing...well,that's something we can
determine at a later date." said
reeve Bob Fisher.
The arena deficit, at the end of
1990 stood at $84,000 and is ex-
pected to be down to less than
$50,000 by the end of 1991. Most
of the cost of the arena renovation
project was borne by provincial
grants and local service groups.
The ratepayers meeting is sched-
uled to begin at 8:15 p.m. on May
29 after the 7 p.m. drain meeting.
Home owners beware
EXETER - The Exeter Police
are encouraging senior citizens
and elderly residents to be cau-
tions of anyone who approaches
them to do house repairs.
A number of fraud or sub-
standard workmanshiip incidents
are being investigated in the
Brantford area. Chief Jack Hark-
ness said with the state of the
economy, this could be happening
in Exeter.
He advises local residents to ob-
tain a business card from the firm,
and get a phone number of the indi-
vidual and the company. Do not au-
thorize any work to begin until you
have obtained at least three quotes
for the same work. Never provide
more than 10 percent deposit.

Zurich still
in search of
illegal sewer
hookups
ZURICH - Village council are
still hunting down a few house-
holds in Zurich suspected of having
their sanitary sewers illegally
hooked into the storm sewer sys-
tem.
At last Tuesday's council meet-
ing, reeve Bob Fisher asked what
fines are available for those found
with the improper connections and
clerk Maureen Simmons said she
understood the fines were in the or-
der of $300.
"Well that's not going to be
enough," said Fisher.
Simmons said that the village
works superintendent has been
checking into the sewer problems
and has raised the possibility there
could be problems with leaking tile
drains or other sources causing ex-
cess amounts of water getting into
the system.
Fisher said the village should
have a policy to automatically fine
any householder found illegally
connected to the storm sewers.
