What is it about warm weather
that keeps sports fans away from
watching local teams?
Last summer, my first here,
was a bit of a surprising one as
far as spectators were concerned
at the local ball parks and soccer
pitches. Mind you the minor
teams also have (and always will)
have lots of supporters.
The simple reason being the
youngsters need a ride to the ac-
tivity and so mom and dad just
stay and watch how little junior is
doing. But what about big senior?
Exeter has got several outstand-
ing senior teams which should be
watched. Player/coach Dick Lord
is rallying the troops for the senior
Centennial soccer team. They are
looking for players and their first
practice is Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at
the South Huron Recreation field.
This past weekend both the
hardball Express and the fastball
Royals were supposed to have
their opening workouts but I don't
think the weather co-operated.
Okay, I'll admit it's pretty tough
for a lot of people to get out in the
summer because they participate
in a sport of their own, or head to
the cottage or putter in the garden.
But just once in a while it would
be nice to see a few friendly faces
at a Royals game, or an Express
game or pulling up a lawn chair to
watch the Centennials.
I can guarantee those that do
come, they won't be disappointed.
If you're tired of watching men
play, fret not because there are
two good female fastball teams in
the area; the Exeter Greys and the
Crediton Ladies.
They went head-to-head in the
playoffs last year and there were
lots of fans out to watch the excit-
ing fastball. Don't be afraid to
come out during the regular sea-
son folks.
All winter long thousands of
fans migrated to the South Huron
Recreauon Centre to watch the
Mohawks and the Hawks. It's esti-
mated the final Mohawks -
Dunnville Mudcats game drew
over 1,200.
If even one-tenth of that came
out 10 a game in the summer, it
would be a nice compliment to our
local senior athletes. They bust
their buus like the Mohawks,
many of them even go to the Mo-
hawks games.
Just one more thing, last time I
checked admission to sit in the
stands at an Express game, it
wasn't very much. I even believe
you might be able to watch for
free, imagine that.
Look for all the local schedules
in the Times -Advocate soon.
See you out there.
National Physical Activity
Week is May 24 - June 2 and the
local recreation department is
planning several events.
The fust day, May 24 is going
to be 'sneaker day' so make sure
you've got those running shoes
laced up and aired out.
Recreation director Lynne Far-
quhar also says the two elemen-
tary schools will be getting in-
volved and hopefully they will be
conducting a 'buddy walk'.
Highlighting the week will be a
company challenge on May 29.
Farquhar hopes to have 10 teams,
comprised of four members each,
competing in some very interesting
events.

Hawks -Irish series
Swapping shirts pays off with win
Celebrate - Exeter's Harien Tinney had lots to cheer about last
Tuesday night as the Hawks came from behind to win 6-5 in over-
time. However the Irish pulled to within a game on Sunday with a 6-
3 victory.
By Fred Groves
LUCAN - A few hockey fans at
the Lucan Community Centre
might have been a bit confused
here Sunday afternoon.
In an attempt to 'shake things
up', the Irish switched shirts and
came up with a 6-3 win over the
visiting Exeter Hawks.
Game four was played last night
in Exeter and the fifth game goes
tonight in Lucan at 8:30 p.m.
The winner will advance to meet
Thamesford who defeated Welles-
ley in five games. Last season, the
Trojans beat the Irish in the pro-
vincial final.
After dropping the first two
games of the best -of -seven OHA
Junior 'D' west division final,
coach Ken Needham decided to
have a team meeting with his
troops.
In the -room before the game,
Needham said title player suggest-
ed they all trade shirts to set if
they could get back on the win-
ning track.
Greg DePrest who gave the Irish
an early 2-0 lead thought the
change in shirts, might have con-
fused the Hawks.
"They were more concerned
about that the first two shifts and
we got two quick goals," said De-
Prest:
Although he was wearing Todd
Hayter's regular number, he didn't
confuse too many when he went in
on Exeter goalie Dean Fratar-
cangeli.
Both goals came as a result of
some fancy stickhandling right at
Fratarcangeli's doorstep.
"I don't prefer to shoot because
that's my weakness so I deke. I'm
faster with my hands," said De -
Prest.
In the early moments of Sunday's
game, both teams had their chances
to score as Lucan's Dan Jenken
made a big save and Fratarcangeli
juggled a shot and hung on.
Quick goals: Just 14 seconds
into the middle period, the Hawks
regrouped and pulled to within one
when John Bell scored with a shot
which looked to be deflected in
front of Jenken.
But eight seconds later, Lucan re-
gained their two -goal margin when
Jason Wilson picked up a rebound
off the post.
"It was a big turning point," said
Lucan coach Ken Needham.
"That was one of the breaking
points of the game,' said Hawks'
coach John Kernick.
"1 thought if we would have shut
them down instead of letting them
*brick into it, it would have been 4•
different outcome," he added.
Bell went end-to-end and scored
on the powerplay to make it 3-2
with about 13 minutes left in the
period.
Andy Ross had the nicest goal on
the night for the Irish as he was
hauled down froth behind and with
the referee's arm up for the penalty,
managed to slid the puck past Fra-
tarcangeli.
Schuyler got one between the
pads and Kernick replaced Fratar-
cangeli with Clint McCann. Doug
Clark got one back for the Hawks
to round out the second period scor-
ing.
The only goal in the third came at
the midway point when Steve Mat-
thews collided with Paul Manders
but still managed to dish the puck
off to Jon McEachern who scored.
Upset with ref: In the third peri-
od, both teams did a lot of slashing.
Exeter's Larry Lewis laid out a lot
of lumber and teammate Haden
Tinney sent Wilson to the dressing
room with a chop to the ankle.
With the clock winding down,
Hawks' Andrew Barton positioned
himself in front of Jenken and was
dumped heavily twice by Ed Van-
kerkeorle. When Barton retaliated,
he was sent to the box by referee
Kelly Mehlenbacher.
"I thought tonight was the worse
officiating we've had in a while. I
wasn't happy with what he did,"
said Kernick. ,
"There has to be better officials
around," said Needham.
Hungry Hawks
take game two
EXETER - Hungry as Bears, or in this case Hawks.
Last Tuesday night at the South Huron Recreation Centre, the Exeter
Hawks won game two of their best -of -seven series with the Lucan Irish,
6-5 in overtime. '
The win gave Exeter a two -games -to -none lead in the west division fi-
nal.
Trailing 5-2 at the start of the third 'Period, the Mils"ga"fl htiitgry look
in their eyes and chipped away at the difference. They tied it with less
than nine minutes in the third period and Dave Dalrymple got the winner
at the mid -way point of the ten-minute overtime.
Penalties hurt the Irish in the third period as Exeter's Scott Schiedet
notched two on the powerplay and when Dalrymple stepped into the slot
and fired it past Bob Szabo, that was also with the man advantage.
Exeter coach John Kernick thought the reason for the about face by his
team might have done with a talk he had with his players. He also felt the
Hawks were in a little better shape.
"When Lucan comes out skating, it seems they get tired as the me
goes on. Maybe we were in better shape earlier in the series," said Ker -
nick.
A goalie change might have shook things up for the Hawks as Kernick
pulled Clint McCann and started Dean Fratarcangeli in the third period.
Fratarcangeli held off the Irish and with nine seconds left in regulation
got his skate on a Greg DePrest shot which saved the game.
The line of Schiedel, Harlen Tinney and midget Jason Heywood played
their best game of the post, season as they werein on four of the six goals
and Heywood set up'the winner.
Schiedel netted two, while Heywood, Derek Shackleton, John Bell and
Dalrymple's winner accounted for Exeter's offence.
Answering for the Irish were Jon McEachem with two, Tim Hayter,
Darren Neil and Brad Bowers.
