Rickshaws return for holiday weekend
Shu'
tle service
GRAND BEND - There will be
a rickshaw shuttle service in
Grand Bend during the ftrst holi-
day weekend.
In conjunction with the new mu-
nicipal parking lot which has been
created, Hong Kong Limo Service
could have as many as three rick-
shaws in which the public will be
able to utilize to transport them
from the parking lot to their de-
sired destination.
"This company is very reputa-
ble, said councillor Bill Uniac.
There were rickshaws in Grand
Bend last year but the village did
not receive their transient trader
operating fee.
Hong Kong Limo Service cur-
rently runs rickshaws in Stratford,
London and Toronto and Uniac
said they will be operating in Gode-
rich and Bayfield this summer.
"They're operating in Stratford,
they have for a couple of years.
They're going to have three (rick-
shaws) here for May 24 weekend,
it's a start," said Uniac.
Parking has always been a con-
cern of the village and at one time

makers.
However, she was angered at the

"I feel angry, hurt, betrayed," said
Von Damm. "The majonty of the
others did too."
"Who's to say they (seniors) have
more right to housing than handi-
capped or disabled," added Von
Damm.
Meanwhile MPP Paul Klopp has
been made aware of the situation
and says there are similar proble,ns
it was proposed to have parki at
the Grand Bend airport in Slepien
Township and shuttle tourists in by
bus.
The new municipal parking lot
will be located by the municipal
building and near the Legion. Signs
have been ordered and will be in
place to give direction to the May
2,4 visitors.
"It's not the be all and the end all
as far as a shuttle service, but it's
going to get us thinking about one,"
said Uniac.
in a Goderich seniors building and
he has been in contact with the
Ministry of Housing.
"I► troubles me and it troubles a
lot of people," said Klapp.
"We're trying to see if we can get
some answers. I think a lot of it is
maybe communication. Maybe
some of these people shouldn't be
in this particular home," he added.
Klopp said his staff is trying to
contact certain social groups m the
riding to access more money in an
attempt to ratify the problems.
"It concerns me. It concerned me
10 years ago when they first started
mixing up these groups," said
Klapp.
"We've already been approached
as a result of suggesting the shuttle
service, by a more concrete propo-
sal for a proper shuttle."
The rickshaws are rented out to
students for a set monthly rate.
Each rickshaw weighs about 85
pounds and can carry two passen-
gers. The company charges on the
basis of riders paying what they
think the ride is worth.
Main Street would be the main
route so the rickshaws can get pub-
lic exposure.

Dog catcher to
start checking
GRAND BEND - Dog owners
beware.
Beginning immediately the dog
catcher in Grand Bend will be do-
ing regular spot checks. Those
dogs without their licenses will be
taken away and kept for five days.
Council originally planned by
council to start the regular checks
in May.
But some council Members felt,
since the village has been receiv-
ing some complaints of dog's -at -
large, to start the checks now.
"What I'm hearing is that coun-
cil wants the spot chocks to begin
t1oTkI nQ_ or two a week," said
reeve Bruce Woodley.
Councilor John McDowell had
another solution to the checks.
"I'm sure those of us who live in
the village know pretty well the
dogs that are let loose. Would there
be any merit writing a letter to the
owners that we tend to have the
dog catcher involved?"
It was decided the dog catcher
would be corring in once a week,
on a random basis but he would be
contacting the clerk -treasurer when
he comes to the village.
"Somebody should be able to
monitor if he's here or not," said
councillor Bill Uniac. "I don't watt_..

Blue box program
running smoothly
GRAND BEND - According to
the Bluewater Recycling Associa-
tion, the first blue box collections
in Exeter last week went smoothly.
Dave Wilson at the Association
said he was aware of only a few mi-
nor problems, and how a part of
one street was missed on the truck's
route. He said that should be cor-
rected for future collections.
"Aside from that, everything has
gone smoothly."
He said the Association has re-
ceived a few calls from Exeter resi-
dents asking about what to put in
the boxes and why the truck only
picks up from one side of the street.
Wilson said they are told the sin-
de collection makes the col -
program more efficient be-
cause only one truck operator is
required and each street has to be
travelled only once.
If anyone has put materials that
cannot be recycled into their boxes,
Wilson said diose hems are left be-
hind with a note to explain why.
Even though Bluewater increased
their collection from 25,000 house-
holds to 30,000 households on
April 1, Wilson said that the
amount of material collected
mped far in excess of the norm.
Aad appatcntly been stock-
piling mettle* materials in antici-
pation of the blue box
"That's usual," said Wtbon. "I'm
sure things will quiet down a bit
and well get back t0 more normal.

volumes."
The next target for Bluewater's
campaign to reduce waste is to in-
troduce commercial recycling. Al-
though Wilson says a few business-
es have blue boxes already, a more
comprehensive depot program to be
introduced in October will "move
on to commercial recycling in a big
way".
Even a plan to ship used tires
away for recycling is in the works.
"Tlierc'll be a cost to the munici-
palities, but there's a cost in it [re-
cycling] anyway," said Wilson.
Some people have been asking
how the costs of the blue boxes
themselves were paid. Wilson ex-
plained that they are funded in
thirds paid by the Ministry of the
Environment, the local municipali-
ty, and by OMMRI, a collection of
companies which make up the On-
tario Multi -Materials Recycling
Inc.
Otherwise, he said. ,the blue box
appears to be running
"There's the usual phone calls
and the odd box that's missed...but
that's usual for the first two weeks.
Things will iron themselves out,"
said Wilson.
Wilson also invites anyone who
has questions about the blue box or
other reccycling proprarns to call the
