Regier, Verbeek capture doubles' titles
By April Lewis
LONDON - Debbie Regier and
Ian Verbeek combined to win the
mixed doubles competition at the
Clark Road Senior Badminton
Tournament on Saturday. Regier
and Verbeek helped South Huron
Panthers to the overall team title.
The senior team travelled to
Woodstock on Thursday where
Regier and Verbeek won the
mixed title by beating a duo from
Norwich. They helped the seniors
to an overall first place tie with
Sarnia St. Pats.
In singles' action. Chris Gardner
placed second, winning three
fames before losing a close 17-14
in the final. Becky Morgan,
ranked sixth, overpowered two of
her opponents but was eliminated
in the third game.
Keary Manders and Carrie Oke
tel
up in doubles' competition
and came home with a fourth place
finish after winning three games.
The boys team of Brett Rideout and
Pete McAllister were unranked as
they were put out by a team from
East Elgin.
Juniors:The junior team came
home with several victories last
week as they attended tournaments
on Tuesday in Woodstock and the
following day in London.
In Woodstock, Lisa Forrest won
the consolation final in singles' ac-
tion while Ryan Stuart ended his
day with a victory in the consola-
tion semi-final.
Fred Godbolt and Lynn Work-
man along with the duo of Chrissy
Morgan and Candace Miller won
three of their matches in doubles'
play.
There was some misfortune on
the day however when the team of
Sivichay Sengkhourunany and
Keith Crawford had to withdraw.
Crawford suffered an eye injury
when he was hit with a smashed
bird.
On Wednesday, the team trav-
elled to London and took put in the
Western Ontario Badminton Asso-
ciation's Team Champ. The
team did well making it to con-
solation semi-final. •
Coach Sue Stewart was Dave
again impressed with the juniors ef-
forts and their compatabi ity.
"They had d wonderful showing,"
said Stewart.
"They're 'really learning how to
play together as a team."

Seniors win twice
EXETER - The South Huron
senior boys' soccer team opened
their season victoriously last week
with a home and home exhibition
series against Seaforth.
Wednesday in Seaforth, Ryan
Hern and Jamie Wulterkins scored
in a 2-1 victory. The following
day in Exeter, the Panthers won 2-
0 as Mark D'Anna scored both
goals.
The boys open their regular sea-
son soccer schedule at home on
April 17 when they host St. Mary s.
The girls begin their season on
April 18 when they travel to Mitch-
ell and are at home April 23 against
St. Michael.
Hawks pushed to limit by Pta Stanley Lakers
By Ray Lewis
EXETER - After squandering a
3-0 series lead in their Western
Ontario Junior 'D' west division
semi-final series, the Exeter
Hawks defeated PL Stanley Lak-
ers 4-3 at home last Tuesday to
take the series four -games -to -
three. The win put Exeter into
the west division final against the
Lucan Irish.
"I thought we played good
down in Pt. Stanley," said Exeter
coach John Kernick. "We defi-
nitely had more chances but we
just couldn't finish off."
In a thrilling finale Derek
Shackleton paced the attack with
three goals, two of them unassist-
ed, and also added an assist after
being quiet for most of the series.
The final buzzer seemed to bring
a collective sigh of relief as the
Lakers dominated the Hawks in
the game's late stages looking for
the tying goal.
I think it was the crowd that
really put us over," said Hawks
coach George Pratt. "We can
only hope to see the same support
in the next series."
Exeter opened the scoring just
1:57 into the game when Shatkle-
ton scored unassisted. The Exet-
er forward stole the puck and
beat two defenders before snap-
ping a shot past Lakers' goalie Ed
Moore.
Shackleton then added his sec-
ond of the period at 9:49 when
Jim Dickins made a nice move to
pull Moore out of position and
then slid the puck to Shackleton.
Shorthanded
The game then turned ugly with
the Hawks placing themselves
shorthanded for much of the re-
mainder of the period. Referee
Ivan Bryce handed out 23 min-
utes in penalties during the period
with 17 minutes going against Ex-
eter.
The barrage started with coinci-
dental minors but then Shackleton
took a five minute major for
checking -from -behind and John
Bell received four minutes for
butt -ending which left the locals
two men short.
Pt. Stanley got one back before
the end of the period when -divi-
sion MVP Mark Redden scored
unassisted, and the Lakers tied
things up midway through the
second while J.P. Cousineau was
off for slashing.
Redden notched his second of
the game when he beat Hawks'
goaltender ClintMcCann between
the pads after taking a feed from
Trevor Parish and Chris Wismer.
The Hawks got the go-ahead
goal at 14:22 of the second when
Corey Colhoun scored from Dick-
ins and Shackleton, and re-
opened a two goal margin just
nine seconds later when Shackle-
ton finished off the hatrick. Dick-
ins tied up a Pt. Stanley defence -
men allowing Shackleton to walk
in uncontested.
Exeter seemed content to sit on
the lead as the Lakers then began
to- forte. the Hawks -and were re-
warded when Dan Maguire scored
at 8:34 of the third period, after he
and Dave Vanderwerf were al-
lowed to sneak in behind the Exet-
er defence.
The Lakers pressed for the re -

Silver medalists in women's volleyball
KIPPEN - Bump, set, spike! That was
what a few local women were doing
once a month for the past six months.
The local females entered a volleyball
team into the 1990/'91 OVA Region 3
L' Women's league. The league tournaments'
schedule meant five matches of two
games each at Saunders High School in
London one Sunday per month.
After finishing in second place at the end
of the year the "Last Spike" team went into the medal
round on Sunday and came away with silver medals.
At the start of the medal round, the squad played
y
third place team Dorchester for a best out of five se-
ries and went the limit but came away with a decisive
fifth game. They then entered the final medal round
against the league champions Waterloo who the local
squad were able to split games with all year.
Again the women went the distance with five
games but lost the final game by a score of 15-11.
Player/coach Leah-Kain Donnelly had a few things
to say about her team, "being the first year in the
league, we did better than we had fust thought. Our
team had a lot of fun playing together and we are
looking forward to a better showing next year".
