OMHA 'DD' bantam, midget se
Series continues
on Saturday
LUCAN - Two teams from this
community are still alive in their
attempt to win an Ontario Minor
Hockey Association 'DD' champi-
onship.
Friday night in Lucan, the ban-
tams had little trouble with Stroud
as they won big, 6-3. But two days
later in Stroud, the tables were
turned as the home team fought
off elimination and won 2-1.
Game five of the six -point series
will be played in Lucan at 9 p.m.
In the 6-3 win, Lucan got on the
board first when Steve Dame was
hauled down and while a penalty
was being called, he collided with
the net but the puck found it's way
in.
Just 33 seconds into the second
period, Stroud's John Primavera
tied it up as he let one go from just
inside the blueline. But for most of
the middle frame, Lucan really
turned it on.
Rob Paul pounced on a rebound
from Sean Lawrence's shot on the
powerplay and the home team had
the lead which they did not pive up.
Another man advantage situation
saw Jamie Lightfoot on the receiv-
ing end of a nice pass from Jason
Hodgson.
It was 4-1 when Shaun Fair-
weather scored on the breakaway
just as Lucan came off killing a
penalty. Stroud got one back as
Chris Ayers scored on a deflection
but goals by Lucan's Chris Haskett
and Brian Heckman clinched the
win.
Stroud's Chris Butcher got the
lone third period goal.
Stroud 2, Lucan 1
There wasn't a lot of scoring but
there certainly was plenty of penal-
ties in this one as Stroud won 2-1
on Sunday. The home team was hit
with 14 minor penalties compared
to nine by Lucan.
Stroud jumped into a 2-0 first pe-
riod lead on goals but Lucan made
it close when Fairweather teamed
with Steve Dame and Hodgson.
Ringette
Petites capture bronze
at West Regionals
LONDON - Despite winning all
their ' games in the qualifying
round, the Exeter Beckers Farm
Equipment petite ringette team
had to settle for the bronze medal
in the Western Region finals Sun-
day.
The locals fell victim to the tie
breaker rule; least goals against.
Exeter beat London 8-4, topped
1Kes1 gip: 7-6, 4deloated, Kitchen-
er 10-5 and beat Woolwich 9-1 in
the preliminary round but it wasn't
good enough to get to the champi-
onship final.
On Friday, Exeter doubled Lon-
don 8-4 as Shawna Rowe had four
goals and Kelly Regier added a
pair. Jodi Truemner and Sarah
Mosurinjohn also scored. Sara
Hamilton, Shannon Sherwood,
Cathleen Chappel and Mandi
Hayter all had two assists each.
Saturday in the one goal win
over West Lorne, Rowe once
again powered the offence with
five goals while Meagan Ratz and
Mosurinjohn also scored. Theresa
Wilhelm had a strong game with
three assists.
In the 10-5 win against Kitchen-
er, Rowe had four goals and an as-
sist while Ratz, Mosurinjohn;
Hayter, Wilhelm and Kelly Regier
scored. Missy Hayter had three as-
sists.
Rowe netted three against Wool-
wich while Ratz and Wilhelm each
had two goals. Truemner and Regi-
er also scored.
In the bronze medal winning
game against Chatham, Exeter
came out on top 10-2. Rowe had
five . goals, MosurigjQba and_. Ratz
added two each and Wilhelm
scored.
Exeter totally dominated this
game and goalie Cheryl -Lynn Wein
was strong in net.
Coached by Michele and Alan
Hodgert, Tonya Riehl and Kathy
Hayter the team had a very success-
ful season. They were 6-5-2 during
the regular season and 6-1-0 in the
playoffs. Exeter won the silver
medal at their own tournament and
took the bronze in Dorchester.
Belles: Exeter Belles managed to
advance to the bronze medal game
of their division but were beaten
14-5 by London.
They lost their first two games, 9-
1 and 8-4 to Chatham and Lambeth
before regrouping to beat London
5-4 and tie Waterloo 4-4.
Missed check - Lucan's Chris Haskett (11) missed this check but
he and the Lucan bantams beat Stroud 6-3 Friday night in OMHA
'DD' championship series action.
Pfaff's lategoal -
keeps Midgets alive
GODFREY - It was a long
weekend for the Lucan midgets
here as they tied and lost in the
Ontario Minor Hockey Associa-
tion midget 'DD' final series.
Saturday, the home team need-
ed an empty-netter as they edged
Lucan 4-2 Jeremy Jemec and
Brett Revington scored for Lucan
with Brian Lewis drawing an as-
sist.
The following day, again in
Godfrey, Shane Pfaff scored with
30 seconds left in regulation time
to get the tie. The fame went into
a ten-minute overtime but neither
team could score. If Godfrey
would have won, they would have
taken the championship.
Following a scoreless first peri-
od, Godfrey's Al Pixley scored
but with 3:19 left in the second,
Larry Liddell tied it up for Lucan.
The home team took a big two -
goal lead as Paul Eyles and Brian
Hart connected.
But Brett Revington scored un-
assisted and then set up Pfaffs tie-
ing goal.
Godfrey needs a tie to win as
they are up five points to three.
The series continues Saturday in
Lucan at 7 p.m.

Minor hockey In
Lucan Isthrlving
f record books see
kept for local minor
hockey organizations,
Lucan has got to be in
the midst of a very memorable
experience right now.
According to Lucan Minor
Hockey Association president,
Glenn Silver, its been over 35
years since' this town has ever
had three teams in theall-Ontario championship.
Call it luck or call it good coaching and a solid executive.
For the second straight year the atoms made it to the finals but Lu•
can, the defending provincial champs had to finish second behind
Beaverton.
Both the bantams and the midgets, however, are still alive and
both have very good chances of winning the big prize. (See this
weeks sports section for further details.)
I hada chat with the local president the other day and he told me
something that was rather startling. The Lucan Minor Hockey Asso-
ciation is basically comprised of four executive members.
Silver is the president and he is joined in the front office by
Wendy Hardy, Diane Bellamy and Les Greenlee.
"It's been a bumper year for us," explains Silver.
"It's a small executive, we don't get too many out. It's kind of an
insult to the ones that are there."
For those who belong to a minor sporting organization, it takes a
lot of work. It's almost impossible to believe it's being done by just
four people. Well my hat is off to you.
But the many long how and thousands of miles on the car does
have its rewards.
"Three of them in the finals is a bonus. We're quite happy, it's
paid off for us," said Silver.
The Lucan atoms had only three returning players in Corey Smith,
Chad Greenlee and Ryan Carroll. The rest were either novice or
atom house league players last year.
"They had to fight for everything they got, they had 56 games,"
said Silver.
He, along with Greg Flanagan and Lee Bellamy coached the at-
oms.
There are still lots of players at the lower levels, under bantam.
"Our numbers are really good on the bottom of the scale," said
Silver.
But it's when the hockey players find other interests in high
school is when there seems to be less bodies to form a team. This
year there was just one midget team but it had 18 players.
The midget team has got a lot of talent on it and is coached by
Rick Abel, Alex . Hyde, Les Greenlee and Bruce Cornish. Two of
their players, Jeremy Jemec and Paul O'Shea have also been playing
all season with the Junior 'D' Irish.
As for the bantams, Silver said some boys in that age group had to
play in Exeter, again a numbers problem.
They are coached by Brett Fairweather, Pete Duenk, Bryan Dick
and Terry Jacques.
Whatever the outcome of the games are this weekend, win or lose,
the Lucan atoms, bantams and midgets have certainly made their
community very proud.

Congratulations to both the Exeter Peewee Legions and the Ban-
tam Legionnaires for winning the tournament championship in Elm -
vale. An interesting note; Ian Jean, a winger with the bantams went
all season without a penalty.
Still with Exeter hockey, the EMHA will be having its annual
awards banquet at the South Huron Recreation on Sunday. April 21
from 2, tek4:30 ppm. an&og A Z411 wlli have -its annual mating
at the'outh centre at 8 p.m.
Fastball season is quickly approaching and Deb Lord of the Credi-
ton Ladies team is in search of a few competitive players, especially
a catcher. If you want to give it a try, don't be shy give Deb a call at
234-6396.
Here's an interesting tid-bit; the St. Louis Blues have only got
four players who were on the team just throe years ago. I guess
change is for the better as they've got a good shot at winning the
Stanley Cup.
Just a reminder that an organizational meeting for Roller Hockey
will be held on Wednesday, April 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the South Hu-
ron District High School cafeteria. Even if you're not on a team,
show up and sign up.
Sat., April 13 9 a.m. - 3 p. m.
