Wilfrid Laurier University music professor Donald Landry instructed the students with alternat- ing half-day seminars and a musical grand finale in the afternoon. Usbome Central public school teach- er Betty Jean Talbot accompanied on the piano. U.C.W. entertains visitors By Rhoda Rohde THAMES ROAD - In last week , news it should have read approxi- mately 40 friends and relatives gathered at the home of Lorne and Margaret Hern on Saturday eve- ning, March 30 in honour of Phil and Marjorie Johns' 45th wedding anniversary. A pot luck supper and an evening of music and fellowship were enjoyed. A belated Happy An- niversary to Phil and Marjorie. UCW At their April meeting, the Unit- ed Church Women entertained la- dies and men from Caven, Kirkton, Zion churches. There were 46 in at- tendance. The basement of the church was decorated with Easter lilies and many coloured butterflies, reflect- ing the Easter theme of the meet- ing. Laurel Miner opened the meeting with the the call to worship "Gar- • den of Gethsemane". Hilda Kellett read the Scripture Lesson and Pat Ballantyne led in prayer. Alma Ballantyne favoured with some piano selections which were much enjoyed. Margaret Stewart gave a recita- tion on butterflies. and Easter and then introduced the guest speaker, Gary Jewitt, principal of Huron Centennial School at Brucefield. Jewitt took a year's leave from teaching and went to Liberia as a Project Overseas 1990 from Cana- dian Teachers Federation. He showed pictures and gave a wonderful commentary of his expe- riences while there. Laurel Miner thanked Gary and presented him with a gift. Pat Ballantyne closed the first part of the meeting with a reading, "Races of the Earth". The meeting was turned over to President Janis Richardson, who welcomed everyone. She men- tioned the meeting at Centralia, also the invitation to Cromarty April 9 and to Woodham May 14 at 8 p.m. The group sang Walk Softly in Springtune and Janis closed with the UCW prayer. Groups U and C were in charge of the smorgasbord dessert and beverage which brought a very in- teresting and informative meeting to a close. Coming events E.T. Loonie Tunes wrap up Party will be held Friday, April 12, 7:30 p.m. at Thames Road with a sing song and fun night. All are welcome to the Adult Bible Study at the manse, Thurs- days, April 18 to May 9 from 10- 11:30 a.m. A bowling night is being planned for both congregations for Satur- day, April 20 at Zurich Bowling Lanes from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. A sign up sheet for those interested is on the bulletin board at both churches. Sunday, April 21, our guest preacher will be from World Vi- sion. A joint Session meeting will be held at the manse on Wednesday, April 24 at 8 p.m, and an Official Board meeting at Thames Road on Wednesday, May 1 at 8 p.m. Church service Rev. Sheila Macgregor was in charje of The Second Sunday of Quilt workshop still registering • EXETER - A one'day Quilting Workshop offered through the South Huron Recreation Centre still has a few openings for anyone interested in stripquilting. If you happened to miss last week's regis- tration, you can still sign up by calling or dropping in to the Rec- • reation Centre office. The workshop is being held on Saturday, April 20 from 8:30 am. until 4:30 p.m. at the South Huron District High School. Sewing ma- chines are available at the school for those who do not have one. The fee is $27 which includes Dining for Seniors' news EXETER - Our Easter program was complete with Easter bunny and eggs and enjoyed by about 70 persons. Hot ham and scalloped po- tatoes were on the menu. Each week is started with 0 Canada and our special prayer plus some hu- morous readings by Tammy Antaya - our co-ordinator, and later sing songs led by Pat Skinner and Grant Mills. On March 5 Jean Hodgert presid- ed at keyboard. A card was sent to Case Allen at Huronview. All were encouraged to send a card to Case. Michael and Laurie Coolman played accordion selections. Fourteen seniors are interested in fibre program corning soon. Antaya read a poem "Not Growing Old". Happy birthday to Bill Smits. Che- ryl Feagan from Health Care Pro- motion in Clinton presented some facts on stress and how we can cope with it. Draw prizes won by Bill Smits and Helen Hindle. St. Patrick's day was celebrated with stew and biscuits on March 12. Door prize was won by Beatrice Munn. A sympathy card was sent to the late Olive Alleman's rela- tives. A poem was read by Tammy, "The song of the Lazy Farmer." On March 19 Maxine Sereda on keyboard. Antaya gave a reading and Beatrice Tate won the draw prize. Several guests attended today. A new spirit of giving A'poem "My get up and go hasgot up and went" by Tammy. High school students assisted with set- ting up and cleaning up. Tammy Antaya dressed in Easter bunny costume, on March 26 hopped around and really enter- tained us. Josie Ryckman played the keyboard. Six birthdays were celebrated with cake and candles. Each one blowing out a candle. That's how everyone keeps young. Several guests were introduced and welcomed. Draw prizes went to Beuy Laye, Vera Bullock and Ray Cottle. Father Murphy was our guest speaker for the day and spoke on different ways we should keep new life in our lives. He was thanked by Antaya and a rousing clap from all. Bob Heywood entertained on ac- cordion, also singing some favor- ite gospel songs. He was intro- duced by Olga Davis with a humorous reading and thanked by Grant Mills. Olga also read an Easter Message. Several danced to the music. Upcoming programs April 9 our second anniversary with Susan Graham and some Hu- ronia choir members entertaining. Aprit 16. U.c.w. entertains parish CREDITON - "To doubt or not tc doubt"? was the question posed by Rev. Ed Laksmanis during his ser- mon at Crediton United Church, Sunday morning. Wednesday night of last week, members of the United Church Women entertained choir and church session members with a de- licious roast beef supper which was very greatly appreciated. The next night, UCW members accepted an invitation to meet with their counterparts at Centralia Unit- ed Church. This week, the junior choir prac- tice is scheduled for this afternoon, Wednesday after school and the senior choir will rehearse in the evening at 8 p.m. The Explorers group will meet again next Tuesday, April 16 at the church after school.
