ation Centre in the seventh and de-
ciding yy night in Exeter, the
Hawks lost 6-4 and by a similar 6-
4 score last 'Tuesday night in Port
Stanley.
Sunday, both teams had their
chances to put the game away ear-
ly but it was 3-3 after 20 minutes
and 5-4 for the Lakers at the end
of two periods.
During the regular season, Exet-
er finished second in the standings
and the improved Lakers were
a very close third.
"They (Lakes) had a good
record, you have to give them
credit for coming back. We
haven't had the killer instinct,"
said Hawks' coach George Pratt,
Jr.
Lakers' coach Rick Sutherland
said having defencemen Dan Ma-
guire back in the lineup has made
a difference. Maguire who has
Junior 'B' and 'C' experience, set
up the first two goals.
"He's our top defenceman carry-
ing the puck out and he's our lead-
er, said Sutherland. Maguire
missed the first two games of the
series.
It took Port Stanley just 37 sec-
onds to open the scoring when Jeff
Collard gobbled up a rebound and,
put it past Hawks' goalie Clint
McCann. Both centre Derek
Shackleton and defenceman John
Bell were caught napping.
But Shackleton made up for it
when he shot the puck hard at the
glass behind Lakers' goalie Bill
Hellems and it came back, hit Hel-
lems and went in.
McCann was involved in a heated
altercation behind the play when he
slashed Rob Branton who jumped
on him. Allan Blommaert came to
McCann's aid.
The see -saw contest began sway-
ing back -and -forth when the Hawks
looked disorganized in their own
end and division MVP Mark Red-
den netted his fust of three.
A J.P. Cousineau goal made it 2-

than two minutes left in the first
frame, Doug Clark converted a
good passing play from Cousineau.
"Port Stanky has played well
against us, we knew what we were
up against," said Pratt.
"We have to get together as a
team."

LAMBETH - Somethings, nev-
er change.
Once again the Lucan Irish
have made their way into the
Western Junior D' divisional fi-
nals as they eliminated the Lamb-
eth Lancers with a 4-0 win here
Friday afternoon.
The only scoring in the first pe-
riod came when centre Dan
Brand teamed with Greg Muir
and Todd Hayter. Lucan had a
strong middle period and added
three more.
Muir scored from Andy Ross
and Jamie Pearce and then bqth
Tim Hayter and Pearce scored
unassisted. Goalie Dan Jenken
got the shutout.
The Irish had a few days off as
they awaited the winner of the
Port Stanley -Exeter series which
was tied at three games each
heading into last night's seventh
game in Exeter.
Lucan could be opening the
next series at home as early as to-
night.

Forechecking.
That was the big difference
Wednesday night in Lucan as the
Irish easily beat the Lancers, 7-1.
Lambeth got on the board first
just 3:20 into the game but Lucan
exploded for four of their own in
the opening 20 minutes.
Lucan put the presssure anit
the Lambeth end of and
resulted in Muir spinning and
backhanding the puck into an
open side of the net.
Just over a minute later, Jon
McEachem got what proved to be
the winner.
He went down the right side
and fired high past both Lambeth
goalie Brent Lewis and one of his
defencemen.
"We forechecked well," said
McEachern who added one more
later in the period.
"Everybody knows we should
beat these guys. Nobody wanted
to lose."
Irish defenceman Kevin Leitch
and Lambeth's Scott MacDonald
met real hard on the red line a
couple of times as the Irish threw
their weight around for the first
time in the series.

With 5 2 "left in the -first peri-
od, Brand missed a good chance
right in front of the net but his ef-
forts weren't without reward as
Muir gobble up a loose puck.
It only took the Irish 49 seconds
to make it 4-1 as McEachren got
his second.
Although neither team scored in
the second period, the Irish clear-
ly dominated, bumping and
knocking the Lancers off their
game plan.
Wednesday's game was a big im-
provement over last Sunday's con-
test in which the Irish looked ver
sluggish.
"I didn't say a whole lot. Just you
have to do it together and they
amout pumped up," said Need -
Irish goalie Bob Szabo wasn't
tested a lot but he did make a big
save on Glen Marshall.
Later in the period, Marshall col-
lided heavily with Lucan defence -
man Todd Hayter behind the Irish
net, losing his helmet.
With Brand, Paul O'Shea and
Steve Matthews in the lineup,
Needham juggled his lines.
"That was my plan and I wanted
to see if it would work. It worked
real well," said Needham.
One line which wasn't tampered
with was the combination of Dar-
ren Neil, Jason Wilson and Brian
Schuyler.
They teamed to notch the fifth
Lucan goal but it was defenceman
Pearce who did a lot of the work.
Pearce carried the puck over the
blueline and while being pushed
off the puck slide it over to Neil
who passed to Wilson all alone in
front of the net.
Lucan continued to put on the
pressure as Jack Legg came out
quickly off the draw, took a pass
from Tim Hayter and snapped it
between Lewis' legs.
While being pinned into the cor-
ner, Neil passed over to Schuyler,
again all rn front.•

Bantams win Shamrock title
STRATHROY - For the first
time in over 10 years and possibly
the first time ever, an Exeter team
has won the Shamrock League 'A'
division sham oonship.
The Exeter mutate bantams

in what probably was the longest
game any of the young players
have ever participated in.

his hat trick just 39 seconds into the

Chuck Wickins added one more
for the Lakers and David Dalrym-
ple scored for Exeter with a hard
shot between Hellems' legs.
Facing elimination once again,
the Lakers -won 6-4 in Exeter Fri-
day night.
The Hawks had a 3-1 lead thanks
to some solid goaltending by Clint
McCann and a natural hat trick by
Cousineau. The `veteran winger
gave. the home -barn .a.1-0 .lead 'at
the end of the opening period when
he walked in on Hellcats and fired
one from the right circle.
It was 2-0 early in the second pe-
riod when Clark dug it out of the
corner and passed it through heavy
traffic onto Cousineau's stick.
Wickets pulled the Lakers to with-
in one but Cousineau made it three
on the powerplay as he combined
with Clark and Andrew Barton.
But the Lakers tied it up as Jeff
Collard deflected a Doug Jamieson
re-
bound.shot and Hawgot back with
1:38 left in the period as Paul
Manders blasted one under Hellems
arm and into the corner.
It was all Pt. Stanley in the third
on goals by Sheldon Speers, Trevor
Parrish and Shawn Morton.
Trailing 5-1 at the end of the sec-
ond period, the Hawks battled back
in game five last Tuesday niOt
in
Pt. Stanley but came up short 6-4.
After 20 minutes, the Lakers led
by a goal as Maguire and Redden
connected while Tinney was set up
by Scott Schiedel and Heywood.
The difference in this game was
the middle period as Pt. Stanley
outscored the Hawks 2-0. Redden,
Morgan and Paul Satchell gave the
Lakers a commanding lead.
But in the third period, the
Hawks came to life. McCann re-
placed Dean Fratarcangeli between
the pipes and Exeter took advan-
tage of their powerplays. -
Shackleton scdied less than sev-
en minutes into the period as he
teamed with Blommaert. Then BBarton back-
to-back powrplay goals four min-
utes apart. Shackleton and Clark set
up both.
The Lakers added an insuran
marker with 40 seconds left as R(
den got his second of the night.
