SHDHS Reach for the Top team quiet about success EXETER - What is the square root of 13 subtracted by the num- ber of times the Toronto Maple Leafs have won the pennant since 1967? The last half of the question may be easy, but there's always a catch. Six South Huron District High School students and Barb Golding, history and continued studies teacher, have made it all the way to the Reach for the Top regional . competitions for the fourth year running. SHDHS's Reach for the Top team is comprised of Garde 11 stu- dent Jacob Peterson, 17, Grade 12 student Mark Russell, 17, Grade 13 students David Thiel, 18, Mar- nie Walker, 18, Tim Miller, 18, and top scorer Geoff Poole, 18. Golding is quite proud of her group who haveto respond to ques- tions which range from - Who was the first passenger on a hijacked plane? to Who was the first person to own a phone in Mississauga? "You can study for it," said Gold- ing. "But, it is more general knowl- edge than anything else." Although SHDHS has already battled F.E. Madill High School in Wingham, for the regional champs' title, their lips are sealed until the game is televised in June. If the SHDHS are indeed the re- turn champs, they will go on to a provincial match in London this May. Although there are no monetary awards in the contests, Golding be- lieves it is a good way for students to compete in an "intellectual man- ner." Some Reach for the Top stars have been requested to go on as contestants for the hit game slow Jeopardy! There are other fringe benefits for top competitors as well. Provincial Reach for the Top champs go on to an international competition in June. Last year, the top teams in- cluding SHDHS went to New Or- leans. Although the team is tight-lipped about their success, their talent is no secret. The SHDHS team has won the provincial rounds of the Reach for the Top bouts three years consecutive.
