"Because we Care"
By Pastor Jeannie Udall
Holy Clover, Batman!
The Blarney Castle in the south of Ireland has attracted tourists for
hundreds of years. Legend has it that if you kiss the blarney stone
you will be blessed with a cajoling tongue and the art of flattery.
In other words, you're given the blarney known as "the gift of gab!"
My, how many people around us must surely have visited Ireland!
You don't need to be Irish to share in the fun of St. Patrick's Day.
It's a time when most everydne dons green attire, adopts a strange ac-
cent, re -reads Dr. Seuss' book Green Eggs and Ham, and generally
has a fun time.
Throughout most of North America, we have taken a Spirit celebra-
tion, and made it a celebration of spirits! Our modern day hoopla is a
far cry from the first St. Patrick's Day.
Traditionally, the pubs were closed, and March 17 was a time to at-
tend Church - for three full days! Baby, have we strayed a long way!
St. Patrick died on March 17 somewhere between 461 and 492. Ire-
land remembers that date because of what Bishop Patrick's life and
work had meant.
He took a divided country, worshipping a multitude of gods, and
spent his life spreading the Christian message. As the people came
together in worship, the Irish people began to come together as a
country too.
Legend has it that St. Patrick used the shamrock to unravel the
mystery of what Christians call "The Holy Trinity". For a people who
had always worshipped many gods, it seemed strange that Patrick
talked about one God in three persons.
Let's face it - you don't need to be Irish to find that confusing!
Holding up the shamrock, Patrick noted that just as the clover has
three leaves united on one stalk - so too, are the Father, Son and Spir-
it united as one God.
Perhaps this simplicity can be expanded. What are we talking about
when we say "Holy Trinity"?
Father - Its hard to keep at a distance one whom we know as 'fa-
ther'. The very title suggests an intimacy and closeness that is hard to
deny. The gender is not significant - Father or Mother - its the fact
that God is placed within the context of person.
No longer can we see our God as an object or a thing A 'Holy It', if
you will. Instead, God becomes a subject that exists, speaks and acts
m a love which is completely unique.
God the Father becomes a reality of perfect freedom m love which
determines everything about our world.
Son - God the Son makes known to us the fatherhood of God. The
good to which God orders everything has a concrete name. At the
center of the preaching and ministry of Jesus is not his person - but
the coming reign of God's love.
It's all well and good to talk about a world of love, but can it ever
be real? For many, it's the person of Jesus that becomes our experi-
ence of love. In the Son we have a God who has entered into our his-
tory.
Spirit - If love has its origins in the Father, and its center is in the
Son, then love has its completion in the Spirit. It is the person of the
Spirit that makes love our personal, interior possession.
The Spirit is God's power, active in our history. Intervening by
word and action, God brings us into a kingdom of love. Being
touched by God leaves us feeling overwhelmed by a reality that is
not of ourselves.
No matter what your nationality or faith, wherever people in our
world seek out truth and goodness, therein lies the Spirit of God at
work. Like the simple clover, we know God as three persons in one!
