Many families take this opportunity to vacation together. And travel and tourism businesses flourish. Life is good! On the other hand, in the wilderness of life, there are many who wake up each morning already weary from the struggle of life! Our world is a funny place. We watch as the Kuwaiti refugees try to return to their homeland. Be- cause of pollution and destruction caused by relentless bombing, it is estimated that 1 in 3 Kuwaiti people will suffer from poverty. The entire world holds out compassion for these people! Yet, it was just this past Christmas that our own city of London an- nounced that 1 in 3 people - our neighbours ! - live below the Canadian poverty line! I don't seem to recall this being an international issue! Nor was there any public outrage! Humanity is a mixture of successes and failures, compassion and bru- tality. We seem to be made up of a potential that allows us to be both caring and dedicated, as well as being down right mean and ugly. In to this world of complexities and imperfections we sense a pres- ence of God that somehow, miraculously, chooses to love us! Why? We don't really know. All indications would suggest that we're inconsistent, hypocritical and unreliable people. Certainly not worthy of the love from God or anyone else for that matter. Worthy!? Is it possible that we can be loved without being worthy? Our spintual selves say "YES". Somewhere deep inside of each one of us is the belief - the hope - that we are load inspite of ourselves. It would seem that 'Grace' alone is our deliverance. Grace is the key to a balance in our lives that would allow us to strive for the positive and constructive elements in our relationships. It is grace that over- comes. . What are they saying about 'Grace'? Essentially, grace is our participation in the goodness of God. It's what makes us exist in another way and becomes something real within the human soul. Many people have said this is in many different ways. For Augustine, grace is responsible for expanding our horizon of free- dom beyond mere choice of objects or decisions based on self-centered designs. For Aquinas, grace is a new power and nature, that somehow raises us up to a new level of existence. Luther suggests that grace is God's forgiveness and mercy for the sin- ful nature of people. Rahner views grace as God's personal offer and presence of himself to all people across the whole of history. Whether your days are happy and care-frfle, or if you find yourself disillusioned and despondent, life at its best suggests that God's love for you affects, converts and transforms you. Grace is God's accepting and forgiving love which raises us up to the fulness of life and vital activity. Tap into the love of God and take a walk on the wild side!
