Big second period for Lucan
By Fred Groves
MT. BRYDGES - As expected,
the Lucan Irish eliminated the ML
Brydges Bulldogs in Westem On-
tano Junior 'D Hockey League
playoff action here Saturday night.
Lucan swept the best -of -seven
west division series in four
straight, capping it with a big 10-2
win in game four. The Irish were
first during the regular season
while the Bulldogs were eighth.
Saturday's game was very close
in the opening 20 minutes and the
Bulldogs led 2-1 on goals by. Paul
Marcus and Arron Hill. But Lucan
goalie Dan Jenken was flawless
for the next two periods.
"I don't think they play like an
eighth place team because they
really get pumped up for us," said
Irish forward Jack Legg.
The Irish face the winner of the
Belmont -Lambeth series. Lambeth
held a three -games -to -one lead fol-
lowing the weekend.
"We'd rather play Lambeth be-
cause Belmont is really tough.
Who ever it is, it's going to be a
tough series but, I think we can do
it," said Legg.
Legg, Darren Neil, Brian
Schuyler and Jon McEachren all
had two goals in Saturday's big win
with singles to Greg DePrest and
Greg Muir.
In the second period the visitors
exploded for five big goals and
were ahead 6-2 after 40 minutes.
"I don't know what happened, if
they (Mt. Brydges) tried to change
the game plan and it didn't work or
what," said Legg.
The second period barrage started
when Irish defenceman Todd
Hayter carried the puck deep into
Bulldogs' territory and Legg
pounced on rebound to tie the
score at 2-2.
Muir came down on a two -on -
one with McEachren who made it
3-2. A similar play saw Neil get
his first of two thanks to some leg
work by'Schuylet.
Later in the game Schuyler, the
Irish captain, was speared and had
to be helped from the ice. DePrest
scored off the faceoff to increase
the lead and McEachren rounded
out the scoring spree.
Lucan coach Ken Needham said
pressuring the Mt. Brydges defence
helped build the second period
lead.
"We.. told them (Irish) to relaxe
and play the game: Just go and

_ Lucan novices lost 3-1 to Dor-
work hard. We stayed on their de-
fence, they're preuy weak.
"We were going to the net, going
for the rebounds, said Needham.
At the end of the second period,
DePrest was knocked to the ice
very hard and the physical game
continued into the final frame.
In the third period Mt. Brydges
Don Southwell got a hold of Jamie
Pearce's facemask which started a
fight between the two big players.
Southwell came out on the short
side of the battle and pushed a

Goaltending the key as Hawks
sweep series against Seaforth
By Fred Groves
SEAFORTH - It takes good
goaltending to win in the playoffh.
Sunday afternoon Dean Fratar-
cangeli and the Exeter Hawks
blanked the host Seaforth Centen-
sires 5-0 to sweep their best -of -
seven Western Ontario Junior 'D'
west division quarter -final series
in four games.
It was expected for the Hawks to
take . the series, as they did finish
second in the regular season stand-
ings compared to the seventh
place Centenaires, but Exeter had
two shutouts.
In the opener, goalie Clint
McCann won 4-0 and Sunday his
partner Fratarcangeli also got the
shutout. In between the Hawks
won 3-2 and 3-1.
"I think they were close games.
Seaforth actually thought they
could beat us," said Exeter coach
John Kernick. "They didn't go into
the series thinking it was going to
be easy for Exeter."
"I like to see low scoring games,
the good defensive hockey.
While McCann won the opening
three games between the pipes,
Fratarcangeli watched from the
bench. He was finally glad to get a
post -season start.
"rve been waiting for my
chance and Colonel (Kenrick)
gave me one. I wanted to make the
best of it," said Fratarcangeli.
"He bounced back, he played a
really strong, game. I knew he was
frustrated," said Kemick.
Fratarcangeli's last start was the
final regular season game in Mitch-
ell where he was shakey and al-
lowed eight goals in an 8-5 loss. He
said he had to get his confidence
back.
"I knew I played terrible in
Mitchell. This was good, I knew I
needed a confidence builder."
Between legs: The Hawks
opened the scoring with less than
five minutes'remaining in the first
frame when Derek Shackleton shot
one through Dana Duskocy's legs.
It was almost 2-0 for the visitors
but Duskocy made a pad save on
Jason Heywood's penalty shot. The
rookie got the chance when he was
pulled down from behind on a

in the second period Exeter
seemed a little disorganized in their
own end and Fratarcangeli was
called upon to make a couple of big
saves.
Shayne Robinson fiave the
Hawks a two -goal cushion as he
poked it over the line and he added
another with a high shot. Robinson
missed the thiras he suf-
fered a broken finger. Hawks de-
fenceman John Bell made it 4-0 on
a breakaway.
With 2:25 left in the game, Fra-
tarcangeli nearly had his shutout
bid broken as the puck got behind
him, was entering the net, and Bell
shot it into the corner.
"I went out and challenged him
as far as I could," said Fratarcangeli
of the shot. "Hopefully my defence -
men could cover up for me and
Bell did."
Jim Dickins scored with 1:59 left
but after the goal, Seaforth's Don
Brown shot the puck and hit referee
Pete Chisholm m the face. Brown
was given a ten-minute miscon-
duct.
Earlier in the period, Exeter's
Larry Lewis shot the puck after the
whistle and he went to the box for
ten minutes.
Friday night , in Exeter, Hawks
McCann continued to excel allow-
ing just one goal as the hosts won
3-1. In the threeplayoff games he
started, McCann allowed only three
goals.
The Hawks got on the scoreboard
first when Heywood and Scott
Schiedel crowded the front of the
net and it was Schiedel pouncing
on a rebound.
With 1:08 left in the second, Bell
aggressivley went into the offen-
sive zone and backhanded the puck
past Jason Cooper.
Seaforth got right back in the
game, narrowing the margin to one
when Danny Wildfong blasted one
pest McCann to score a shorthand-
ed goal just 17 seconds into the
third period.

Cousineau scored from David Dal-
tympie and Harien Tintney. Referee

New skills learned
By A nil Mewls
EXETER ../1n evening 'cl ge 'presented itself Wednesday at
South .Huron District School, as local students' were invited to
talon part in a field hockey clinic.
The workshop was offered to those interested in learning some new
skills as well as those hoping to polish old. The event was held as a
prelude to indoor field hockey competition but was also an attempt to
introduce more males to the sport.
Among the instructors was Andrew Griffith, a student from the Uni-
versity of Western Ontario, who taught many new stick -handling and
ball control techniques. In addition, the players were given some tips
on how to perform short corners and lectured on some of the rules
which differ from those of their outdoor counterpart. The evening end-
ed with a variety of controlled scrimmages.
As for South Huron's hopes in 1991, coach Jim Workman remains
optimistic.
"We've got quite a few returning," says Workman. "It will depend
on attitude."
