Exeter beat the visiting Centenaries 4-0 and in Seafcrth won 3-2 on Sunday. Will the real Derek Shackleton please stand up. sidelines The speedy forward with the Exeter Junior 'D' Hawks has done a remarka- ble impression of both Dr. Jekyll by and Mr. Hyde. Fred For those who watched him Groves last year, he made quite a reputa- tion for himself as a guy who liked to stir things up. I wasn't around these parts to see him, but I've been told he's done an about face in the other/direction. I doubt very much he would have walked away from a couple of punches to the head like he did Sunday afternoon in Seaforth. After highsticking Don Brown during the second period of the playoff game, Brown retaliated with a couple of hard shots to Shackleton's face. But Shackleton backed off, went and served his time in the pwal- ty box and ended up notching the winning goal late in the third peri- od. "I want to win it," he said of the Hawks bid to win the Western Ontario Junior 'D' hockey championship. "There's stuff you have to take." Coaches John Kenrick and George Pratt have been impressed with his change in attitude and rewarded him by making him an as- sistant captain. "You have to take it for the team," said Shackleton of the ham- mering he takes from the opposition. "I've got an 'A' and you have to show team leadership and keep your head" The Hawks are affiliated with the St. Mary's Junior 'B' Lincolns. Shackleton was called up for the playoffs and could be suiting up full-time next year for his home town Lincolns. But right now it's time to concentrate on the Junior 'D' season. On Friday he and John Bell made the trip to Alvinston for the league banquet. Shackleton was named to the first all-star team as a left winger, even though he usually plays centre, and Bell was selected to the first team at defence. In his third full season with the Hawks, Shackleton has still got three more years of junior eligibility. He doesn't know whether he'll be in St. Mary's next year. "They want me full time next year but it depends on where I go to school. If I get into London (post -secondary education) I'll be back here (Exeter)." Kenrick and Pratt have spent lots of time with Shackleton this year just emphasizing to him to be disciplined and walk away from altercations. Pratt, now a co -coach was an assistant under Jack Nairn last year. "He really didn't listen to Jack as much. He's matured a lot. I've really noticed it," said Pratt. Last year Shackleton was suspended at leasttwice in post -season play. One of those stretched into this season and the Hawks were without his services for a few games. "If he gets out of control we'll sit him on the bench and he doesn't like sitting," said Pratt. It's a safe bet to make but if Shackleton was out of the lineup, the Hawks would certainly miss him. By Fred Groves SEAFORTH - Veteran forward Derek Shackleton fired an ice lev- el shot into the comer here Sunday aftemoon late in the third period as the Exeter Hawks edged the host Seaforth Centenaires 3-2 in Western Ontario Junior 'D' playoff action. Friday night in Exeter, the Hawks won the opener of the best - of -seven• setter 4-D.'Gabe' time goes Friday night at the South Hu- ron Recreation Centre at 8:30 p.m. and then it's back to Seaforth Sun- day afternoon. Just two minutes into Sunday's game it looked as though the Hawks, who finished second dur- ing the regular season, would have little trouble with the seventh place Centenaires as J.P. Cousi- neau came down the right side and hit the post. Seaforth's Danny Wildfong got the puck deep in Exeter territory and scored on a breakaway. The teams headed into the first inter- mission even when Hawks' cap- tain Jeff Dalrymple shot from the point, Andrew Barton got one re- bound but was stopped and Doug Clark got the second -chanter. "They (Seaforth) played a really good game but we worked just as hard," said Exeter coach John Ker - nick. Hawks' goalie Clint McCann, who recorded the shutout in the opener Friday night, and his coun- terpart Dana Duskocy, were superb on Sunday. McCann had to stop a breakaway early in the game. "I'd like to think I'm playing a bit better in the playoffs," said McCann. When Wildfong came down and - put the Centenaires on the board very quickly, McCann didn't seem too upset. "It was a good goal, the shutout had to end some time." He admitted he has a lot of help out there from his teammates. "The guys are playing really good in front of me. They (Seaforth give us a good scare every time we play them." During the regular season, the Hawks only lost one of five games to the Centenaires but the games were close. Besides Cousineau's dinger off the post, Jason Heywood hit the cross bar and the Hawks could have had a two -goal margin after 20 minutes but they had to wait until early in the third period to take the Following a scoreless second pe- riod, it took Cousineau just 1:13 to score in the third as he took a nice pass from Barton and fired it at just about the same spot where Shackle- ton would net the winner. Seaforth came back and tied it up as McCann made one big save on Jason Schoonderwoerd but Blair Beuermann was there to bang in the rebound. .. "They. (Seaforth). knewtics ty. _liad to win this game. For them, it wis a big game," said Kernick. It looked as though it was going to go into overtime but Shackleton took a pass from Cory Colhoun in the corner and put it past Duskocy at the mid -way point of the final period. Win opener: Friday night, Exet- er came out big and jumped into a 2-0 lead. Colhoun backhanded one into the net and then after linemate Cousi- neau won the draw, Clark crossed over into the circle and fired low on Duskocy's suck side. In the second period, Shackleton shot and Colhoun was there to gob- ble up the rebound for his second of the night. Clark added one more in the third as he scored while be- ing shoved to the ice.
