EXETER - When you've got
two good hockey teams, either one
can win when they faceoff against
each other.
Last 'Tuesday night at the South
Huron Recreation Centre, the vis-
iting Lucan Irish edged the Exeter
Hawks 5-3.
Just how close are these two
Western Ontario Junior 'D' Hock-
ey League teams? They've played
five times and prior to Tuesday's
game, both had won twice.
But in the final game of the ri-
valry series, it was Darren Neil's
hat trick that made the difference.
He scored once in the second
frame and added back-to-back tal-
lies in the third fora natural hat
trick (three goals in a row).
It was the first three -goal night
of the season for the veteran for-
ward and he came very close to
getting one last year again the
Hawks.
"I had one last year but they
gave one goal to (Andy) Ross,
said Neil.
The win clinched fust place for
the Irish and for Neil, it was a nice
Q
way to cap off the seasoe. ,
"Anytime you lock up the sea-
son and *et the winning goal, it's
great," said Neil.
Tuesday's game was one of the
best either team had played all sea-
son. There was no scoring in the
defensive first period and no pen-
alties.
The best scoring chance of the
opening period was when Ross at-
tacked the neutral zone and blasted
one at Exeter goalie Clint McCann.
He made the save but it trickled be-
hind him and hit the
Lucan got on the I a less than
two minutes into the middle frame
when Jack Legg raced down the
right side. A backhander by Greg
Muir made it 2-0 before Exeter got
one past Bob Szabo.
Lucan defenceman Todd Hayter
couldn't clear the front of the net
and Jason Heywood was left alone.
But Neil stole the puck and con-
nected on a breakaway to give the
visitors a two goal advantage.
"I thought we played well," said
Exeter coach John K.ernict "There
were Om things that Lucan did
that upset our flow."
He noticed the Lucan defence -
men get the puck to the forwards
very quickly rather than hanging on
to it.
"We've been trying to get every-
body to do that," said Lucan coach
Ken Needham. "It sure makes the
forwards job a lot easier."
The Hawks headed into the sec-
ond intermission down by just one
goal when David Dalrymple let one
go from 20 feet. Szabo thought he
had it but it got past his glove.
Both teams came out skating hard
in the third period and when Exeter
defenceman Larry Lewis started
geeing physical it looked as though
the Hawks might tie it up.
"In the last two or three games,
Larry has really picked it up," said
Kernick of the veteran defence -
man's efforts.
Neil came from the side of the
net and into the slot where he back-
handed it past McCann to double
the scare 4-2.
1 just put it towards the net, hop-
in*,a said Neil who conceded it
ought have been a little lucky.
Derek Shackleton set up Cory
Colhoun to narrow the gap but Neil
let one go high from the slot with
51 seconds left to play. His third
gml was on the powerplay as
Shackleton was slapped with a
five-minute hitting from behind
penalty.
Shackleton was slashed and shad-
owed in the offensive zone and
then took Greg DePrest into the
boards heavily.
After the game, Needham said
the Hawks who will probably finish
the regular season in second place,
can't be taken too lightly.
"They're a good hockey team,
they'll be there (in the finals). If
they would have beaten us here,
they'd remember it in the playoffs."
O'Shea scores three: While Neil
fired three Tuesday, the next night
in Belmont, rookie Paul O'Shea
connected with three goals as the
Irish beat the Pests 6-2.
Leading 3-0 after 20 minutes, an-
otha rookie, Jeremy Jemec had
two goals with the other from Ke-
vin Leitch. DePrest, Steve Mat-
thews and Ross all had two assists
each.
Hawks beat Centenaires 5-4

SEAFOR The Exeter
Hawks learned Sunday afternoon
they can't take the Seaforth Cente-
naires too lightly.
Exeter won the Western Ontario
Junior 'D' hockey matchup 5-4
In five regular games this season,
Exeter has won four times and lost
a 6-5 overtime decision.
"They're young and when
they're into it they play over their
heads. If you bury (outplay) them
early you can beat them," said Ex-
eter coach John Kernick.
The Hawks scored less than
three minutes into the game when
Derek Shackleton connected. Lat-
er Sunday he suited up for St.
Marys Lincolns in their Junior 'B'
playoff game against St. Thomas.
Jason Carter tied it for the
Centenaries before J.P. (ousiu>eau
put the Hawks back in front. An-
drew Barton, who assisted on that
goal, has been one of the Hawks
most dangerous offensive weap-
ons as of late.
• Friday at home he had a hat trick
against Mt. Brydges and is on a
line with Cousineau and right-
winggeerr Doug Clark.
"WZ're starting to pull together
as a team. We've played a lot of
hockey lately," said Barton.
Exeter finished its regular sea-
son in Mitchell last night and in
eight. days played five games. But
it didn't seem to slow them down in
the fast paced game against Sea -
forth.
After Cousineau's foal, Jason
Schoonderwoerd, comung off the
injured list, sent the learns into die
dressing room tied at two.
In the second period Exeter's Ja-
son Heywoodlet go with a wrist -
shot ilco a being knocked down
and he scored past Dann Duskocy.

to WOSSA
STRATFORD - The South Hu-
ron Panthers juniors gds volley-
ball team gained a berth at the
WOSSA tournament in Sarnia this
weekend as they finished second
at the Huron -Perth event.
On Saturday in Stratford, the
Panthers opened with a 15-9, 15-2
win over Listowel. South Huron
then cameshort 15-13 and 15-1
to Stratford St Mike's.
The third game of the round-
robin format had the Panthers beat-
ing Goderich Vikings 15-9 and 15-
7. In the finals the locals lost 15-10
and 15-10 to Stratford Central.
It is the third consecutive year the
weeder Panthers have advanced to
WOSSA. South Huron have come a
long way this season as they were
in second last place back in Janu-
ary.
Molting Hawks
beaten twice
EXETER - It was a tough week
for the Exeter Molting Hawks as
they dropped a pair of oldtimas
hockey games.
They
ywere edged 7-6 by Andy's
Old Wrecks. In that game Randy
Gillfillan had two goals with sin-
gles from Bob , 'Brian
Hodgins, Ken Bergmann and Er-
nie Ahrens.
Exeter fell 10-6 to Lambeth as
Ahrens had a big game scoring four
goals.
Defencenan Larry Lewis then
made it 4-2 as he raced in from the
blueline and took a pass from Cory
Calhoun.
The game became rough as Mark
Reid got a stomach full of Dusko-
cssstick and Seaforth's Jason
speared Al Blommaert be-
hind the play.
"Any team, the last part of the
year they intimidate you, but we've
done a good job of controlling our-
selves." said Kernick of his team's
discipline not to retaliate.
A scramble in front of Exeter
goalie Clint McCann led to the
third Seaforth goal even though it
appeared as though the net had
been knocked off before Dave Wil-
liams scored.
In the third period the Hawks re-
gained their two -goal advantage
when Biammaert crossed it over to
defensive partner David Dalrymple
who shot and it was redirected by
Cousineau for his second of the af-
ternoon.
Ted Sills blasted one past
McCann's glove to round out the

Htat tho ants hung hung on.
Although the Cents finished sev-
enth in the standings and the
Hawks were second, Barron noted
at least one Seaforth strength.
"'They've got a good defensive
team but I think we can take them,"
he said.
Batt Bulldogs: Friday night in
Exeter, the Hawks had little trouble
with the visiting ML Brydges Bull-
dogs as they came out on top 6-2.
Barton opened and closed the scor-
ing for the Hawks and added one
more for the hat trick.
"My confidence is really built
up." said Barton of his improved
play -
Heywood had a goal and an assist
while Colhoun and David Dalrym-
ple also scored.
The following night in Mt.
Brydges the Bulldogs trailed 2-0
but came back scoring three goals
in the third period and eventually
sending the game into overtime.
Both teams scored in overtime and
the game resulted in a 4-4 draw.
(Scott Schiedel notched a pair for
Exeter and added an assist while
John Rooseboom and Clark also
scored.
Heading into the playoffs against
Seaforth, the Hawks will be with-
out defenceman Steve Vandenberk
whojust had the cast removed from
his oot and Jim Dickins may be
ready for, the pre -season.
