A Prayer for the Taking
Having just returned from the Ottawa Valley, I was delighted to be
able to see the newly renovated 'Museum of Man'. In keeping with
the changing times, this architectural wonder has been renamed the
'Museum of Civilization'!
Inclusive language has been a 'hot' issue for many years now. Who
among us haven't heard about the word changes that turned 'mankind'
into 'humanity'. If your house is on fie - you now call for the 'fire -
f fighters'!
Even our churches are hearing about inclusive language in worship.
Preachers and parishioners alike, are afraid to use any kind of a per-
sonal pronoun to address their God. We aren't sure whether we
should be saying 'he', 'she', or 'it'l
One would think that, at least for Christians, the matter would be
resolved definitively - or is it? It's true the Lord's Prayer begins with
the words 'our Father', but I don't think that the intention was to sug-
gest that God was a male.
A man once said to me, "My father was a workaholic and was
away all the time. When I call God 'He',I think of one who is absent
from me."
He said his mother was abusive and violent and for him to call God
'she' is to think of a God out to punish him. For this man, God needed
to be above any sexual gender association. God must be God!
And yet, not to speak with a personal pronoun is to deny the inti-
macy of our relationship as creature and Creator.
Calling God 'Father' suggests that we have a God who is close to us
and known personally to us. God is somehow intimately involved in
our lives.
Calling God 'Father' shatters any illusions we may have of God be-'
ing a bental concept or a philosophical entity. It is the Lord's Prayer
that sets the pace for our belief in the Divine as a relationship that
must be lived.
How's your prayer life?
The reality and sincerity of our desire is the passion with which we
pray. Our connectedness to our God and to our own spiritual dimen-
sion of ourselves is nurtured through prayer.
When we come before our God in prayer, it does not mean we are
wringing gifts from an unwilling God. We are going to one who
knows our needs better than we know them ourselves. We go to one
whose heart is of generous love.
God hears our prayers and answers - always. So often, we don't re-
ceive what it is that we have prayed for. And its always easy to think
that's because God has grudgingly refused to give. Have you consid-
ered that maybe God has something different to share.
All too often, we lay our plans, make our preparations, have things
all lined up just the way we want them - and only then do we pray for
God's blessings on our work.
May I suggest that before you make up your mind what is to be
done and how it is to be done - you pray first, and see just what it is
God might want to do!
Prayer opens the channel of communication between ourselves and
our God. Whether our answers are what we desire or not at all what
we expected, we can live in assurance that God's answer to us is one
of love and true wisdom.
There is tremendous power in prayer. We are enabled and empow-
ered by God - through prayer. We are transformed and transcended
by God - through prayer. One of the greatest tools we have as the
People of God is prayer.
We have truly been offered a prayer for the taking.
