For over 115 years, Cook's of Hensall, has been synonymous with
quality agricultural products.
In the fast two years, Cook's, a division of Parrish and Heimbecker
Ltd., has more than doubled its size from four branches to eight.
There are three Cook's branches inithe Exeter area, including Cen-
tralia which is a 25,000 tonne elevator, a high-capacity edible bean
processing and shipping facility, arta a modem fertilizer plant, com-
plete with up-to-date application servlices.
The Hensall elevator facility like Centralia, is fully equipped to han-
dle, process and ship edible beans, corn, soybeans, wheat and oth-
er cereal grains.
The Kirkton site handles white pea beans, com, soybeans, wheat
and other cereal grains, in addition io its fertilizer blending and ap-
plication serviceS. '' '
Merchandising Manager Brad Ford laelieves Cook's constant dedi-
cation to the agricultural industry has kept its customers coming
back.
"Cook's is completely co miffed to this industry and that commit-
ment is evident in the war we have expanded our facilities," said
Ford. "We're here for the long haul."
Ford said Cook's and its 75 full-time employees constantly target
to be the best.
"We strive to meet the customers' needs in all respects," said
Ford, stating two years ago Cook's introduced an On -Board -
Impregnation system which is an injection of herbicides into dry ferti-
lizer as it is custom applied making the process a lot more cleaner,
safer and accurate. It was the first system of its kind, and gave
Cook's a jump-start on its competitors.
In 1989, Cook's and New Life Feeds joined forces to distribute
high quality animal feeds for the beef, hog and dairy producers at all
Cook's locations.
Cook's and Martin Feeds have launched a total pet food program
at all branches for 1991.
Crop information services are provided to Cook's customers as
well as special crop production and marketing seminars. The compa-
ny recently hosted grower pesticide training courses at various sites
throughout the area.
"White beans are a big part of Cook's business," said Ford, noting
the company handles about 40 percent of the white bean crop in
Canada. Approximately 80 percent of the crop is exported.
The Cook's staff is gearing up for spring and the rush of the seed
business. Ford noted white bean seed orders are brisk and some va-
rieties are limited so now is the time to look at purchasing them.
Cook's will hold its annual producer meetings scheduled for Febru-
ary 28 in Parkhill, March 19 in Exeter, March 20 in Brussels, and
March 21 in Lucknow.
Ford attributes Cook's success to its staff, from the local branch
managers to the people in the plants, who do their jobs consistently
well, but most of all, Ford is grateful to the customers who have
made Cook's 'a leader in the industry.
Ford stated Cook's does its part to participate in its communities
by supporting many local events through the course of each year.
"Cook's has certainly come a long way," said Ford. "From its
small start as a family -run flour mill in Hensall in 1876 to what you
see today. And as for the future - watch us growl"
