TORONTO - A new, innoyativ
recreation program for young chit
dren has received a significant finan-
cial boost from the provincial gov-r
emment.
The Ministry of Tourism and
Recreation has awarded a large grant
to the Qntario Physical and Health:
Education Association to market
the new Sportability program to
schools and recreation departments
in southern Ontario. The funds,
$350,000 in total, will be provided
over a three-year period to assist
with development and production,
costs.
"The Ministry is very impressed
with Sportability and we are proud
to be a partner in this effort, said
Peter North, Ontario Minister of
Tourism and Recreation. "We've
already seen some of what Sporta-
bility can do from the pilot protect
in. the North. I believe we'll see
more good results throughout the
rest of the province."
Sportability teaches young chil-
dren basic sports skills in three
categories: track and field,pnas-
tics andteam games.It emphasizes
technique and fun instead of com-
petition. The program debuted last
year in northern Ontario:
The program will be made availa-
ble to all elementary schools
in the province, as well as recrea-
tion departments, community
groups, youth organizations and
' service clubs.
Sportability will also help ex-
pand the female athlete base by giv-
ing equal opportunity for all chil-
dren to participate and succeed.
"This program will help all kids
learn that being active is fun," said
North. "When they've learned that,
thejr'Il want to stay fit for life."
