Titbt is sponsored by the Bowling Proprieto Local boxer sets sights on national title By Ray Lewis SHIPKA - Area boxer Joe Kaak is setting his sights on a national xing champion- ship in Thunder •r• Bay come May. The 22 year-old Shipka native is currently rated J second in the province in his class, the light -heavy weight nov- ice division, and looked very im- pressive at a tournament in Brampton recently, with a third round knockout of his opponent in the tournament final. Ironically, Kaak is also the pro- vincial champion in the heavy weight class, but won't compete as such. At the provincial final in October, he attempted to win his light -heavy weight title but was declared ineligible when he weighed in. "I accidently went into the fight two pounds overweight," laughs Kaak. "Instead of fighting in my class I got bumped up to heavy- weight." to surrendering twenty to his en , he won the ght which helps to confirm his ability. In preparation for the nationals Joe has adopted the same type of circuit training used by former heavyweight champion, Michael Spinks. Serious work will begin at the end of February with hopes that the two month program will have him peak just in time for the Cana- dian Championships. For Joe, boxing has always been a passion, but he feels that he is at a disadvantage fighting in Canada where you not only have to battle an opponent, but also popular opin- ion. "People are really starting to frown upon the sport," admits Kaak. "When a sport becomes un- popular it attracts fewer spectators which triggers a domino effect Smaller crowds mean less revenue which in turn means fewer fights: It also means that equipment Joe Kaak ...boxer must last a little longer. For Kaak, gloves have become a problem. Boxers have their gloves provided by the hosts of each tournament. The rules do not permit competitors to bring their own gloves for fear of them being doctored. Joe's hands are so big that many times the gloves supplied have been, too small. Recently, Joe has been enlbstein- ing thoughts of moving south of the border to train where the market is bigger and he will have the oppor- turuty to fight more often. "Up here it's too long between fights," says Joe. "A fighter starts to lose his sharpness and that's something you've got to keep if you want to win." For now, both he and his coach have adopted a wait and see atti- tude. Everything will hinge upon Kaak's performance at the Canadi- an Nationals.
