Times Advocate, 1991-02-06, Page 18Page 18 Times -Advocate, February 6, 1991 SPORTS FratgrQangeli gets shutout Hawks split weekend games By Fred Groves EXETER - Dean Fratarcanpli turned away 28 shots Friday night as the Exeter Hawks blanked the visiting Mitchell Hawks 5-0 in Western Cpntario Junior 'D' hockey west division action. The next night Exeter wasn't as fortunate as they lost a 6-5 over- time decision to the visiting Sea - forth Centennaires. Exeter's record now stands at 23-8-2 with just sev- en games left It was the first shutout for Fra- tarcangeli this year and the fust time Exeter was able to keep the opposition off the scoreboard. Despite being hampered by inju- ries, Exeter built a 2-0 lead in the first period and increased it to 4-0 after 40 minutes. Veteran Derek Shackleton scored twice and add- ed an assist with goals to Harlen Tinney, J.P. Cousineau and John Bell. In the opening period Mitchell's Steve Murray buzzed around the Exeter net, but Fratarcangeli was able to fend him off. The biggest save of the night, at either end of the rink, came in the second peri- od when Mitchell's Don Wood- house picked up the puck at centre ice and had a very long breaka- way. Fratarcangeli got his glove up by his pad and made the big save. "It was a long time coming," said the all-star goalie. "I don't think I got one last year. The team played well in front of me." Last year, Fratarcangeli was ore of the top goalies in the league but wore the green and white of the Lucan Irish. Although the idea of the shutout was on his mind, Fratarcangeli said it didn't start worrying about it until late in the game. "I didn't really start thinking about it until halfway through the third period." In the dressing room after the game, he said teammate Mark Reid's lucky killer B's shirt might have helped. Quick goal: Exeter got on the board just 56 seconds into the game when Bell blasted one from the point that beat Mitchell goalie Joe It was almost 2-0 when Scott Schiedel had a good chance from a close range. Cosuineau gave Exeter a two goal lead at the 14:05 point when he was on the receiving end of a nice pass from Doug Clark. He was standing at the side of the net and fed it to Cousineau who one -timed it. In the first period, the Hawks were a little timid going into the corners in their own end but picked up that part of their game later in the contest. "We told them to win the battle on the boards," said Exeter coach George Pratt, Jr. "We're going to have to be physical in the playoffs." There were no penalties in the opening period and when referee Paul Petrie whistled the fust one in the second, Exeter cashed in. Harlen Tinney caught Harris way out of the net and without a stick. Exeter's first penalty didn't hurt as Shackleton got his fust shorthanded tally of the season. Harris was injured when Schiedel was speared in front of the net, spun around, and hit Harris with his stick. Steve Soeder came in and al- lowed a third period goal to Shack- leton. "We bounced back well after our game against Lucan. The mood was more relaxed," said Pratt of Exet- er's 3-1 loss to the Irish Wednes- day. No zip: Exeter looked like a to- tally different team Saturday as they held a two goal led in the sec- ond period and watched as the Cen- tennaires rallied back. With just 1:13 left in regulation play, Hawks' Cousineau went to the penalty box for high sticking. Sea - forth pulled their goalie for the ex- tra attacker and with two seconds left Blair Beuermann'tied it up. With time running out in the five- minute overtime, Exeter -pulled their goalie and Ted Sibs re- directed a high shot which man- aged to find its way into the net. After the game Exeter coach John Kanick said his team had nothing to lose since the loser or an over- time game gets a point anyway. "We're looking at standings. Why not o for the-iwo points, we had nothing to lose," said Kernick. Sills and Beuermann led the Sea - forth attack with two goals each with singles to Kory Dietz and Paul McLlwain. "February is the wron* time of the year to come up with a bad game," said Kernick. For Exeter, Reid, Andrew Bar- ton, Cousineau, Jason Heywood and Paul Manders scored. The Hawks spent a lot of time in the penalty box taking a total of 84 minutes compared to just 18 by Seaforth. In the second period, Ex- eter's Bell and Shackleton were both ejected for abusive language to the official. That seemed to take a little steam out of the home team. "It took two or our best players off the ice," said Kenrick. Goalie Clint McCann also was given a misconduct at the end of the game for voicing his concerns to referee Cladue Daw. All three players have been suspended for two games. The Hawks will have a short bench for the next couple of con- tests as the trio will join mjured Jim Dickins, Shayne Robinson and Steve Vandenberk on the sidelines. Hawks happenings: Brothers Jeff and David Dalrymple got a lot of ice time late in the game and the two big defencemen did a good job...With nicknames like 'Beagle' (Mark Reid), "Chuck -Dog' (Corey Colhoun) and 'Peanut' (Paul Mand- ers) what else could you call that trio but the 'Canine Line'...Hawks see action next on Friday when they travel to Seaforth for a re- match with the Centennaires. Lucan filled the net as Pearce, Muir, Jason Wilson, Andy Ros, Derek Greenlee and Steve Mat- thews connected. Goalie Dan Jenk- en picked up his second shutout of the season. The game in Port Stanley was a little tougher as the score was tied 1-1 after the fust frame. DePrest opened the scoring but Rich Jones evened the count. In the second Kevin Leitch made it 2-1 and DePrest gave the visitors a two -goal margin after 20 minutes. DePrest with his third, an empty- peor rounded out the scoring. nob Szabo' playet> a *tint gfiMe Lucan et . , , s „ Boyvling news Jeromkin, Scramble - Exeter goalie Clint McCann had lots of help on Wednesday from defencemen David Dal- rymple (4) and Larry Lewis (2) on this play but the Lucan Irish won the Junlor '0' game 3-1. Lucan -Exeter regular season series tied at two_ games LUCAN - Game four of the Lu - can Irish and Exeter Hawks regular season series was held here Wednesday with the Irish winning 3-1. Two of the best Western Ontario A Junior 'D' west division hockey clubs will meet for the fifth and final time on Febru- ary 19 in Exeter. Following Wednesday's win, the re- nes is tied at two games each. The win saw Lucan jump into a five -point lead in the division ahead of the Port Stanley Lakers and the Hawks. Less than two minutes into the game, Lucan's Greg DePrest hit the post but 20 seconds later he set up lin- emate Jeremy Jemec. The rookie was standing all alone at the side of the net waiting for DePrest's pass. Exeter came back and tied it up on a powerplay goal from Derek Shackleton. Doug Clnfired a rick over to him and he easily beat is Bob Szabo with a backhander. Clark scored the winner in overtime the ,last time the two team's met. Exeter won that one 4-3. Lucan headed into the first break up by a goal when Tim Hayter scored at the midway paint of the open- , ing period from Jenner and DePrest. The trio make up one of the premiere lines in Jun- ior 'D' hockey. When asked if they were perhaps cher, best, Lucan Coach Ken Needham said, "I don't know if it's that good but it's one of the best." Jason Wilson made it 3-1 in the second period on a powerplay effort from Jamie Pearce and Brian Schuyler. Wilson almost made it 4-1 when he blasted a long shot which Exeter goalie Clint McCann knocked down. 14e played well, he made some good saves," said Needham of McCann. As expected from two good1teams, there were sev- eral good chocks. Only two players were ejected from the game for fighting. Jamie Pearce from Lucan and Exeter's Paul Manders wrestled in the third period. Although they didn't drop the gloves, referee Paul Petrie stili gave them game misconducts. "There wasn't any great body checks. It wasn't as rough as it could have been but it was a good tough game," said Needham. Lucan's Darren Neil was briefly shaken up as he was on the receiving and of a good check by John Be 1. Jon McEachem was hurt late in the _ as the b1'g Irish forward suffered what was p silly a aepantted shoulder.
