Heart to heart
February kicks off the Heart and Stroke
Foundation's Annual Fundraising Campaign.
Once again, friendly faces will ask you to
c9takcitae..,dollar ,centra to sup con
tipued research Into Canada's no. 1
More people die of heart disease than any
of the other diseases all put together! And so
good, hard-working people put their faith
into action and trust that those biblical words
of wisdom are true: "Ask and ye shall receive."
When we give of our dollars, or our time, or of our talents - we are
giving out of our own sense of spirituality. And as important as our
clubs, and lodges, and sports events are to us - it is our church that is
the greatest club of all!
You see, it is our Churches, with all of their warts and flaws, that nur-
ture our spirituality and send us into the world to be an example of
goodness and compassion; to be the lone voice in a crowd willing to
dare to risk new ventures.
Many avoid going to worship because they feel much in institutional-
ized religion is hypocritical and in need of change. Although this can be
true, it need not be an argument for not participating.
These people like to indulge in an image of their God as a lone mave-
rick who rejected the ways and institutions of his time and of his peo-
ple. Who somehow pitted his concepts of faith against all the institu-
tional religion of his day.
Such images are more the result of wishful thinking than any real un-
derstanding. It's true Christ did criticize his Church - but he also took
full part in the life and work of his Church!
He attended regularly; was faithful to his faith traditions. He also
rnade demands of his Church and his faith, asking that it be accountable
for its concepts and principles.
To criticize, is for the most part, to make a very worth -while contri-
bution to the Church of our day. To remain outside of its life while be-
ing deeply dismissive of it achieves nothing beyopd a certain satisfac-
tion for our own angers and alienations.
Time and time again, I meet people who confide in me that they are
wally people of tremendous faith. Their's is a deep and personal faith -
so personal that few people even know they have ill
May I suggest that if your faith is so very private, then maybe its not
faith at all!
Whatever else our God demands of us, it is that we live our faith in
our day-to-day lives. Worship may be reserved for the Sabbath, but
faith is active every moment of our lives.
Reach into your own sense of spirituality and enter into the business
of living. When pcple ask you to contribute all that you are and all that
you do - say "Thank You" to God and respond with an enthusiastical
YES"!
