Hometown Windows blinded by success
By ewis
DASHWOOD 7 The goal of
many manufac-
MOturers is to crack
the market with -
in the larger ur-
ban centres. But
while they struggle to strangle
each other there is a local opera-
tion which is thriving in the small-
er confines of rural Ontario.
Bill and Anne Schade began op-
eration of Hometown Window lin-
provements Limited in October of
1987, and have since watched
their business bloom. Today there
are approximately 65 dealers who
sell their vertical blinds which are
manufactured in the 25,000 square
foot building outside of Dash-
wood. They have distributors as
far as Moosonee and North Bay
bade business - Anne Schade punches fabric for the vertical
blinds manufactured at their Dashwood plant. Last year hometown
sold over 5,000 sets.
covering all of Ontario but avoid
the cheapened city markets.
"We wanted to keep to the rural,
outlying areas: says Bill. "So we
avoid the large urban centres."
Originally, the Dashwood
couple opened a replacement win-
dow business and decided to add
customized blinds as a comple-
ment to their operation, creating
more of a complete line. The move
now enables them to sell a com-
plete package with both replace-
ment windows and window treat-
ment.
Both Anne and Bill have spent •
their lives in the Dashwood com-
munity. Bill worked with Conklin
Lumber for 11 years and then
moved to the Henan District Co-
op for six. His experience in the
field gave him the idea for the fam-
ily business.
"The market
has been very
good."
To this day, despite the compa-
ny's success, it remains basically a
family operation. The duo shares
in the bookwork with Bill looking
after sales and Anne controlling
production and plant operation. In
addition, the company has one f_"
time and three part-time employ-
ees.
"The market has oeen very
good," says Bill. "Mostly because
they are a window treatment which
is very easy to control and virtually
maintenance free."
The blinds can totally block light
or adjust to reflect the sun's rays.
They draw like drapes to the left or
right or can be custom ordered split •
in the middle so that they may draw
both ways. This is their biggest
selling point because customers are
able to get exactly what they want.
Best of all is the fact that they are a
very economical way to cover any
opening.
The blinds themselves are made
from polyester -cotton or polyester -
silk fabric and Hometown also of-
fers fire-retardent blinds which con-
tain fibreglass. The company man-
ufactures blinds for both residential ,Hometown bNnds
and commercial use, and area deal- ' tion for wn u
ers include Whiting Miller Carpet&
and Drapery, Nancy's Window Fix-
ing and Grand Bend Decorating
Centre.
Hometown also has a complete
line of both standard and replace-
ment windows. Once again the ;
products are customized and the
business includes installation which
seems to help promote the product.
Last year, Bill and Anne Schade
sold over 5,000 sets of their covet-
ed yroduct. While other companies
ocate in their urban environ-
ment, Hometown remains success-
ful as a hometown business.
'Sinners' on stage at Blyth Festival
BLYTH - Actress Araby Lock-
hart returns to the Blyth stage in
Norm Foster's comedy, Sinners
presented by the Muskoka Festival
on Saturday, February 16, 1991 at
8:00 p.m. in Blyth Memorial Hall.
The play begins when Peter
Kramer, a shy and somewhat jit-
tery furniture store owner, is found
in the arms of the Reverend's wife,
in the Reverend's bedroom... and
wouldn't you know, by the Rever-
end himself! The problem doesn't
hit the Reverend until... was it

Ips?vnt ••'.;.r•I i it., ti,.1
The situation becomes even
more desperate when the furniture
store owner is mistaken for the
Reverend by the local town busy-
body (played by Araby Lockhart).
Of course, the accumulation of
events leads to the involvement of
the police chief and his wife in
more ways than one. The result is
an hysterical, high energy rami
that climaxes in "an affair to re
member". The first performance of
Sinners by Norm Foster was pro-
