Exeter man wins top
finance award in Canada
EXETER - Curt Cooper has been
selected as the country's number
one financier in the agricultural
sector by the Royal Bank.
Cooper put about $8.5 million
worth of new business through the
Royal Bank business centre in Ex-
eter last year, a figure high enough
to put him in the top eight Royal
Bank financiers. While on a muse
with the company's other top pro-
ducers from all sectors, Cooper was
chosen as the number one lender to
the farm industry.
The Royal Bank offers the pro-
motional awards each year as part
of its search for growth in its mar-
kets across Canada.
So how did the small office on
Exeter's Main Street ,receive the
team achievement award for Onta-
rio as well as Cooper's top national
award?
"This area is better financially
than most, and some of it ($8.5 mil-
lion) would be new business," con-
ceded Cooper, but he also noted
many of the loans and deposits he
brought to the office were at the ex-
pense of some local competitors.
Nevertheless, the farm finance
market is not as good as Cooper
would like to see it.
"Farmers keep getting squeezed
on their incomes and things are not
Curt Cooper
put? said Cooper. *They still
have cash flows to pay the bills -
they don't pay them as well as they
did a few years ago, but they do
pay them."
When local farmers do borrow
money, Cooper says there are cer-
tain patterns which indicate what
areas of the agriculture market that
are stronger than others. Hog farm-
ers have been expanding their oper-
ations with new barns and land.
Broiler farms have been doing well
lately and new barns are being add-
ed. The dairy market is fairly
stable at the moment, but Cooper
acknowledges that the cash crop
market is "the one being squeezed",
although a handful are buying and
renting more land. The new GRIP
program does offer some optimism
fur those in the corn market, how-
ever.
Cooper says he has seen his deal-
ings with cash crop farmers with
over 2,000 acres inproduction
quadruple over the past few years.
Hobby farms are also a hot itern,
especially because of this area's
close proximity to London and
Cooper has helped finance quite a
few of them.
In addition to the cruise, Cooper
received a trophy for his award and
a $2,000 travel voucher.
