The two teams opened their best -of -five Ontario Minor Hock- ey Association atom 'CC" on Sun - Tourney this weekend in Zurich day with game two scheduled for Thursday night in Lambeth. Also scoring for Exeter were Da- vid Marshall and David Farquhar while Chad Dalrymple had a pair of assists. Sean Guenther and Geoff Mauer also assisted. Continued from page 14. breakaway. Having heard enough the official blew down the breaka- way and dealt the coach a bench minor which immediately quieted him down. But most of the youngsters agree that this was an extreme case and that things don't usually go that far. The coaches are usually very good and realize what its like for the ref. The officials are also quick to point out that the fans are equally kind, usually busy cheering for their own children. If any criticismdoes come from the stands they find it easy to block out thanks to the glass which acts as a barrier. "It's not like soccer where the fans are really close," says Gavin Snell, a referee for both sports. "Really the only one I hear is my dad, and I know that he's only kid- ding." At this level the officials admit that things are pretty calm. Most penalties are very minor with swearing usually being the most se- rious. "It's not as bad as everyone thinks it is," says Sean McCann. "The worst part is having cold hands." This seems to be the most com- mon complaint among young refer- ees. Skating for 60 minutes in an arena doesn't bother them, but do- ing it without gloves presents a dif- ferent challenge. However, even this the hearty athletes are willing to overcome. They continue to re- turn every chance they get for whatever the reason. "The cold is probably the second happen," worst thing that could appe ,. says Snell. What's the worst? "To fall," he chuckles.
