Tom Har- dy connected with back-to-back goals for the Classics while Greg Burns answered for Clinton. (The Molting Hawks would like the thank all those who helped out at this weekends tournament. Once again it was a big success.) Beat Hensen: In their only start this week, the Exeter Molting Hawks Oldtimers handled Hensall 9-3. Leading the offence was Emie Ahrens as he find the hat trick and set up two more. Ken Bergmann scored twice with single goals from Ron Moore, Bob Jones, Randy Gil- fillan and Bob McDonald. McDonald had three assists, with two assists each to Brian Hodgins and Walt Tiedeman. Veteran Al Flynn, Gilfillan, Moore and Jones also assisted. The three-day 12 -team event, saw the Exeter Rusty Blades beat Forest 4-1 to win the F Division while the Lucan Classics doubled the Clinton Fowl Ups 6-3 in the D Division final. London Road Apples beat Sar- nia 4-2 to win the E Division. (Teams were put into D,E and F divisions based on calibre.) Exeter, which is a fairly new team, opened Friday night with a 4-3 Toss to Stephen Township but bounced back Saturday to beat Forest 4-2 and London Blues 7-2. In the final, Exeter got on the board first when Forest's Brian Boucher coughed up the puck and Larry Skinncr scored from Dale Skinner and Ed Kerslake. Forest tied it in the second peri - cel as Everit Moors got one past Bob Oke. Each game consisted of a 25 minute and a 20 minute period and late in the second it looked as though the game would go into overtime. But Larry Skinner got his second and the game winner with less than two minutes to go. Gary Sararas added one more and with one tick on the clock, Dale Skinner made it 4-1. Hardy scores twice: Although Lucan Classics and Clinton Fowi- Ups battled to a 5-5 deadlock dur- ing the preliminary round, it was Lucan winning the D title with a 6- 3 win Sunday afternoon. In other action, the Classics beat London Relics 8-1 and overtook ri- val Lucan Flyers 4-1. The Classics and the Fowl -Ups played even through the first period as it was 2-2. Can you pick the six best players The best of the best were selected recently at the 42nd annual Na- tional Hockey League all-star game. A panel of five general manag- ers were asked to select a dream team. Name the six best players who ever laced up the blades. I'm a hockey fan and these choices I have to agree with ex- cept for two. In net the great Jacques Plante, I'd have to go with Terry Sawchuck. On defence there is no question that the immortal Bobby Orr of the Boston Bruins and Doug Harvey, who spearheaded all those Montreal Canadiens Stanley Cup teams are the best on the blueline. At the wings are Gordie Howe and Bobby Hull. I agree, how can you not say these guys are the best. Howe played in the most all-star games, was a professional hockey player when he was 50. Hull could do it all, he had a shot probably second to none and he was a blur when he skated. At centre, the experts picked Wayne Gretzky: This is the other one I have to Suestion. The guy is good and he is probilbly the best hockey p'layer in the world right now, but he doesn't play the same style as Jean Beliveau. Sorry but in my opinion, to play this game, especially at centre, you have to be a physical player. Howe, Hull, Harvey and Orr could push and shove with the best of them. Did you notice how these players all come from basically the same time period, except for Gretzky. What about Mitchell's Howie Morenz and the Conacher boys? The sport is changing, players are bigger and stronger. Ten years from now a panel of general managers just might come up with a list like this: Goal - Patrick Roy, Defence - Ray Bourque, Paul Coffey, Centre- Gretzky (always will be on the dream team), Forwards - Guy La- fleur, Brett Hull. What about the best line every put together. When I was a youngster I hada favourite line. One of the greatest trios ev combined to play for the Boston Bruins. Ken Hodge-Phil Aosi &httian, Hodge, Cashman would go into the corners :i ; .`tthheei trumps, while big guy would be king of the slot and wait for the passes. Here are a couple of other good ones, New York Islanders Clarke Gilles, Mike Bossy and Bryan Trottier. In Montreal the Canadiens had a pretty deadly combination in Steve Shutt, Jacques Lemaire and Guy Lafleur. You've got to like Gordie Howe, Alex Delvechio and Terrible Ted Lindsay. What about the six all nasty guys. In net it's realy close between Ron Hextall and Billy Smith. I'll take Smith. On defence - Eddie Shore, Keith Magnuson. Forwards - Dave Williams, Dave Schultz, Terry O'Reilly. Honourable mention to the most annoying - Ken Linesman. sidelines by Fred Groves Someone was standing by my desk here the other day and posed an interesting question. Name five active Canadian Football League players. It was tough but remembering five in the National Football League is a lot easier. Why is that? Perhaps because it's pretty obvious the NFL has a higher calibre of players. Also, the United States media, and at times Canadian, tend to put a lot more emphasis on the American players.
